Rooting in Potting Soil

I had an extra cutting and thought I would try to root in straight potting soil in a cup to see how it would do. This cutting was started in the cup about 6 weeks ago. I pre-dampened the potting soil just enough that it clumped together but was not soaking. I used liquid rooting hormone on the cutting and placed it in the cup. I added the moistened soil and wrapped the cup in saran wrap to lock in the moisture. I put it in my humidity bin with the others. The soil is still damp and I have not added any water yet. As you can see it has rooted quite well. Its under grow lights now.

I think as long as the medium has the correct moisture level and the temps are kept at the optimum rooting range these cuttings will root in just about anything.

Tyler,
Thanks for sharing the picture and Info... congrats.

I would agree that regardless of medium, maintaining the optimal moisture and temperature are the keys to successful rooting.

That root system in 6 weeks looks really nice.  Great job!
What is in your soil mix?

Those are incredible routes for just 6 weeks. That is amazing! Makes me wish I put some of my cuttings into clear containers.

congratulations

Wow, that's impressive. Excellent results and thanks for sharing.

Excellent results!  Pretty impressive for only 6 weeks.

Hi Tyler
very nice would you say that is about ready to go in a pot or still too early?

Wow,very nice root development. Well done Tyler!
I used a slightly different method than Yours With the following results.
Put 10 cuttings in ziplock bags wrapped in damp paper towel for three weeks, they all rooted well and I moved them to clear containers in a 50/50 mix of MGrow starting soil and Vigoro organic potting soil. No heating pad or grow lights. Just placed them in a plastic tub uncovered on top of my fridge. It's been about 6 weeks now and they show very good root development but are fully dormant! I' m hopping that by spring time they will have complete root balls! Yours will probably be three feet tall by then! Awesome!

I mix some perlite just so do not kill them by accident :P
Good job, this is a very healthy plant.

I would like to join everybody else and say Congratulations!!
Good job!
I bet with the grow lights and proper temp, it will be a real tree by the Spring.

Tyler that is a very nice looking plant
keep us updated.

Chrisk if i could talk my wife in to bringing cuttings in the house i would be a happy person.
it would ideal to just root them like you and have them
fully dormant...

great job guys!!!!

Looks great Tyler!  Nice and strong.

Go, baby go!  I'm rooting directly in tubepots filled with ProMix BX with added perlite, seeing a few roots on the sides now as well-hope they get like yours!   What rooting hormone are you using?

Very nice growth. :)

Thanks for the replies everyone..

Pino..... I just used straight potting soil - Shultz brand from walmart

Luzzu.... I will pot it up soon.. I think once the soil drys a bit so I can lift the whole root ball out intact. Btw this is your Cosenza White (which i researched and looks like it may be Dotato which they say is the same as Kadota). We'll have to see how they compare :)

Zone5figger.... I used Wilson's "Roots" liquid hormone from walmart/cdn tire/home depot

Never used rooting hormone, never needed it.Is there any proven advantage to it?

My mother used to use rooting hormone to propagate her roses, and she always got them to root.  I just used rooting hormone for the first time this past month. My observations are:  On a couple of varieties of fig, I saw roots emerging in about a week, while others took a couple of weeks; the hormone seems to scarify the bark of the cutting and roots developed vertically; not absolutely certain whether it increased the percentage of the cuttings that rooted successfully.  The reason I'm not certain is because I also used a heat mat and humidity dome this time.  Changed more than one variable, so I can't be absolutely certain which had the greatest effect.

Rooting hormone killed my cuttings... a year ago. Never used it again even for my roses.
