Rooting question

Hello,

I am John and live in NE Texas. Did a search but probably missed the answer to my question. How much light is needed to root cuttings? I would think that no light is necessary until leaves form, but I have been wrong before.

TIA,
John

Hey John,

everything i have read and experienced is that roots thrive best in dark conditions. this is one reason why most people put their cuttings in a clear cup, to observe root growth, and then this cup is placed in an opaque to solid cup.

welcome to the forum, tell us a little about yourself.

depending on your method i would say. i root uder cheep walmart shop light and grow bulbs. but i also root right in the cup. i have a thread on score rooting in perlite that may be helpful. i have never had luck doing the baggie thing.

take a look here, from the Forum: http://figs4fun.com/basics_Rooting.html

Hello John,

Welcome to the Forum community.

No light is required for rooting cuttings. The only two major requirements are heat (about 75 deg F) and high humidity with good fresh air exchange. If the cuttings are kept cooler rooting occurs slower.

Yes, Light is only required once leaves start to grow.
Good Luck.

i put my cups ontop of the freezer for under warmth. i should had added that. genraly have roots in 2-4 weeks some kinds take longer though.

I am grateful to all for the information. Thank you.

Garden_Whisperer - There is little to tell about myself. I am retired, old, and have no idea what I am doing half the time. I have a lot of interests, but am master of none.
I know nothing about figs except they are delicious. I have a Brown Turkey, a very small potted Celeste, and an unknown fig I found growing beside an abandoned house many years ago. I don't believe it is anything special, but my pets (geese) and I, love figs. The geese are certainly not picky, and I guess I am not either.
I will never be an expert on figs (or anything else), but I enjoy reading about what others are doing.

I live about 50 miles east of Dallas, TX and am in zone 8A.

Again, thanks for the information,
John

Hey John, welcome and when you can show us your plants and your geese too.

Nice intro john. Jack of all trades master of none. I am master of one. Drywall finishing that is. Had my own bizz but it fell through when the bubble poped. Now I sell plants from home and do odd jobs.

A lot of great info here. I'm no master of figs but they seem easy enough to learn and propagate. I like trying new things to see if I can't make it any faster.

Would love to see some pics of the trees.

Hi John - sounds like you'll fit right in on the forum!  We are an eclectic group bound by figs and other things that grow, plants, pets, people, etc.

I live about 20 miles N of Dallas!  We are practically neighbors!!  I bought my first tree last year and now I have a bunch of cuttings rooting, in cups, in the fridge waiting to root and an order with Jon who runs the forum.

Glad you found us and welcome
