Roots

Hello Everyone,
I just want to pick brains about the different roots that happen with cuttings. My last batch of cuttings I did in cheap plastic pitchers from the dollar store. I buried them up to the last inch or 2 of the cutting. I then put the plastic tops on. Usually, I lay cuttings flat in plastic containers or aluminum lasagna pans. Laid flat I have gotten fine roots and root systems. What I have noticed in this last batch, buried straight up and down, is that they have big thick white roots. Any thoughts as to why they are happening one way and not the other. Is it how they are started? The fine rooted cuttings have made healthy plants. I'm assuming the big roots will make good healthy plants as they look really healthy and happy. Any thoughts welcomed.

My thoughts exactly.
