Roots or Mold???

Hello All,

I want to get an opinion from the group. I am trying to root my first cuttings on some, well actually a bunch of Chicago Hardy cuttings that I took off my in-ground trees. My first batch is going on two weeks this Sunday. I initially had them in newspaper and aired them out every couple days until a funky smell started so I switched them to new damp paper towels the after the first week.

The attached pictures have some white starts and would like to know if these are root starts or the start of mold? If this looks like mold, should I try to cleanse again or is it too late?

As always, Thank you!!

Russ

That looks like root initials to me.  Mold is fuzzy!

Looks fine to me.

Looks like they're on their way.

Thank you everyone. If these continue to root then I should have some excess trees. I know they are common but if anyone needs/wants one in their collection then send me a PM. I can ship in the early spring if all goes well.

Not mold. You will know mold when you see it.

I'm away from home on a tablet or I'd get you the link, but search on lenticel.

Thanks for posting the photos!!  It has helped me and I'm sure others also.

Whiteish knots are callous tissue, and roots will sprout from those little knots... looks nice! Very nice... I found that for me it works to put them upside down so, any moist moves along the cutting, then, flip them again, that is if you have time. specially after washing them.. have them dry upside down.

i see lenticels, but not seeing mold or root.

I'm glad I know what they are now. Thanks everyone- I was concerned that they were mold due to the smell coming from the bags and newspaper.

Mold will look just like it does on bread.  Greenish/whitish and raised. Sometimes even black- at that point its a goner.
