Roots & Stuff

Just thought I'd share a few pics of how some of my cuttings are doing so far this season.

The first pic on the left is an Archipel. It didn't have any roots showing yet. But since it seemed so eager to put on some top growth I potted it up anyway. Note the little brebas trying to form on it.

The next two pics are Blue Celeste. They seemed to be very happy to root in my sphagnum moss set-up.

4th pic is a Paradiso ctg doing what it's supposed to :) .

Last pic on right was a very thin ctg I took off of my own VdB tree. It was taken from very low on the tree. Part of it was just below the soil line. It didn't have any actual roots on it but it did have some of those little black bumps you might see on a division just above the roots. This is where the roots formed on this ctg.

Some of these, I just potted/cupped up today while others have been potted for awhile and are showing some good developement. I'll post additional pics on those later.

Edit:
Martin
You have a good imagination.

Hi Ottawan,
i read your post as you type

Nartin
You have a god imagination..

Akram , iv'e always said they make these keyboards for woman and not
for mens fingers .  Keys are small and so darn close to each other.

 ; )

For now i can only imagine the pictures but there always exciting to look at for me when posted.

Martin, Bill is such a tease, lol. Here, I'll give you a couple of pictures of my rooting cuttings I took today to keep you occupied while waiting on Bill..

This one comes from you Martin.

and the same.

and the same again.

Why can't I get roots like these?
My rooting soil is usually on the dry side of moist for fear of killing the plants.
The soil in these rooting bags looks to me on the wet side unless it is just the colour making it look like that.

Ottawan, yes that soil is a little on the wet side. If I remember right, the Sal's was in sphagnum, the rest were in a perlite, pine bark fines, and compost mix. I started them off a little drier but as the roots grew, I gave them a little more water.

Martin, thank you for your support and confidence in me. I can't agree more on the keyboard statement. I'm always hitting two or three keys at a time. My wife would just say 'I don't see what the problem is'?

I started this thread earlier and then was gone for the rest of the day. Nice to see I was getting some positive input on something that wasn't there. HaHa!

Thanks to you too for carrying me on this one Gene :-} . Very nice roots ya got there BTW ;) .

I don't know what the deal is with posting images on this forum. This is the same problem gorgi had mentioned a few times.

I posted the pics, checked & they weren't there. Did the whole thing gorgi had reccommended and they were there. Checked them twice more, stood on one foot, held my mouth just right, checked them again and they were still there. Now they're gone again.
It's the Gremlins I tell ya!!!

Gimme a sec & I'll try again. This time I'll stand on the other foot.

Very strange, I saw them earlier today.

I come back, they were gone.

You edited the post, now they are back again?

Weird.

Yes Jason, I hit "edit" then click "Go Advanced" then hit "post message" and they tend to reappear. This is per the directions gorgi gave to help when I had an issue on a much earlier occaision. Don't ask me why that does the trick -?

EDIT: I had originally made a mistake in the steps (above) I was taking to correct the problem. I had said to hit "reply" and then the other steps. The correction is to hit "edit" first & then the other two steps. Fixed my original post now.

You think this has something to do with the forum itself or with our own operating systems or something else?

Now they'll be gone again after this post ;) .

It's probably the code behind the forum and has nothing to do with your OS/browser/computer.

Ah well. At least it's a fairly easy fix once you know what to do. Note the instuctions above if you've had this prob before.

I'll get some more stuff on here tommorow.

Thanks Bill for showing your pictures they look great as i thought they would.
Gene thanks for giving me my picture fix also.
Gene it must be warm by you taken pictures outdoors ?

You're welcome Martin. Glad you enjoyed them. I know I sure enjoy when others post pics of their "babies" progress.

Somthin' about growing things that just gets in your blood huh? I love walking into my propagation room to turn the lights on. Sometimes I just stand there and look at each plant individually in case I missed a 1/4" growth from the last time I looked at them :-) .

I have plenty more good pics to share once I get the chance to download & then upload them here. The pics above are just the appetizer.

Well, here's a couple to hold us over anyway. This is one of the unk Morely ctgs I got from Jason. I'm finding I like Jon's "New Baggie Method". Takes up alot less space and definately seems to be doing the trick:

Martin, you're more than welcome, that's what we gather here for, to support one another. It's very warm here. We got to 83 degrees this past week. All my trees are putting on leaves, the grass is growing (spent most of yesterday mowing and triming), and the AC is humming.  But it's nice. I saw some breba, swelling on my LSU Gold (not).

Bill you've got some nice roots also, The Jon baggies are really nice. Thanks Jon.

Hi everyone, haven't posted since last fall.  I hope you all had a good winter.

I received my UC Davis order yesterday, and I've put the cuttings in the fridge in the original zip loc bag.  This will be my first try at rooting winter cuttings, and I'm hoping all goes well.  There's still two feet of snow on the ground so I'm not in a big hurry to do anything.

I've only ordered cuttings of five varieties, and so I only have twelve scions to root.  I only got one cutting of the one I most wanted, Violette de Bordeau, so I'll have to be extra careful with that one.

Any tips on how to get started and keep them safe is greatly appreciated.  It's nice to be back and looking forward to spring.

Here are some follow-up/progression pics from post #1. This is a couple of shots of the Archipel found in the first pic on the left at top.

The very tip doesn't look so great. Looking a bit moldy even but it doesn't seem to be spreading. I'm hoping the tip will just dry up without effecting the rest of the ctg. At least there is some good root developement and a bit of top growth.

I cut out a notch in the side of the bag to see if that lower bud would develope. Looks like it may have been in contact for too long with the plastic already though. Doesn't look like it will make it:

Here are some of what the Paradiso & skinny VdB look like now.

Watching these cuttings develope makes me feel like I'm rooting for the prey that's trying to escape from the lion. The lion being the whole process of overcoming the many things that could possibly go wrong at this stage :-} !!

And here are a couple more B4 & after pics.

Giant Amber & LSU Gold. If you hold your cursor over each thumbnail you will see the name of each variety as well as the date the pic was taken:

The Giant Amber is interesting in the way the very tip of the terminal bud died (I think it was touching the side of the palstic container I'm rooting them in). This didn't slow it down much though. As you can see it's still busting out out the seams ;) .

Just sharing another pic. This one is a cutting I got from a local fig I found. I know nothing about it yet other than it's a dark fig. Seems to be a good rooter though:
