Rouge Robin attacks house windows

My experience.

I have 18 feet of windows on the northside and 7 ft on the east side.
Floor to ceiling.

Three years ago one Robin would sit on the deck railing and fly into the
windows repeatedly, from sunrise to sunset. Its beak left white marks
on the glass that required brillo to get off. to say nothing of the droppings
on the deck. No amount of chasing it worked.

In desperation I called the local Audubon. Their explaination: It was
defending its territory and saw his reflection. Thinking it was another Robin
he was attacking it. Suggested I cover the windows and it would leave. It
didn't work!.

I covered all the outside with black plastic. Of course that made inside as dark as a dungen. If I left a tiny slit less than 1/16" it attacked that. Fixed that. Made no difference. Eventually, since it was unsightly, outside as well
as inside I took down the plastic.

Relief came onlly when it got cold and the birds migrated. It did not
return the following Spring with the others.

Not much consolation to Bass but just maybe the babie's nest has nothing
to do with it. Just a rouge Robin.

I just have to say this,
If a bird has developed an aggressive behavior then it is just a matter of time it will take out a child's eye. And please don't tell me this won't or can't happen and that it is protecting its' nest.

I will not compromise safety over a bird. It could be the last of its' species, if it becomes threat then its' going down.

If I were Bass the first thing I would have done after attacking my child is to destroy the nest and everything in it!

A Big AMEN there Bro. Rafed

Well no one really got hurt right? It's just a wittle birdy after all, and no one likes a big bully!

Dog bites human.
Dog gets put to sleep.

If dog is man's best friend and gets laid to rest for attacking a human, how in the world can anyone NOT put down a bird that is attacking a human? You can at least rehabilitate a dog, birds.... Nope!

If I can kill another human in self defense because they are attacking me, I'll be darned if I won't do the same with a bird, "illegal" or not. =)

anything attacking my kids will be shot. survivors will be shot again.

Pete

Well said Pete

Rafed- anyone who picks on someone or something smaller or weaker, for sport or fun or whatever, is a bully. I hope that is not you.

Are you guys really afraid of songbirds? Little bitty 8 oz. songbirds? A bird cannot really hurt any of you, It's comedy to see such a small animal take on such a big one. The fact that people are so afraid is funny.

By the way, you guys have alot more in common with these birds than you think, they are protecting their families too. They are just stupid birds so they do not know people are not a real threat, but people should know better.

Jason dogs are thousands of times bigger than a bird and can actually harm people, and can even be trained to do so. So yeah they can be dangerous.

afraid? no. funny? yes. can harm little kids? YES. peck a defenseless kid, a dead bird.

Or what?

I would laugh, ease up.

Here is a recipe from Louis 14 table
Just for those extra birds you happen to shoot

Bird’s Tongue Stew

Serves 3

Ingredients

1 onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, crushed and chopped

1 carrot, finely chopped

Salt, cumin, ras elhanout, paprika

1 tomato, peeled and chopped

1 tsp tomato puree

1 tin (400g net, 250g dry) chick peas, drained

Water

100g bird’s tongue (orzo pasta)

Parsley, chopped

Method

Pour a little oil into a non-stick pan followed by the onion and garlic.  Cook for 5 minutes on a medium heat until the onions are soft.  Add the carrot and spices and stir.  Fill the kettle and put it in on to boil.  Mix in the tomato, tomato puree and chick peas.  Allow to cook for a couple of minutes, then pour in the water until it reaches about double the contents of the pan.  Add the bird’s tongue and cover.  I advise you to stir it regularly as the bird’s tongue has the annoying habit of sticking to the bottom of the pan - that’s why I specifically mentioned that a non-stick pan is preferred.  Leave to cook for 20 minutes on a medium heat, or until the carrots are soft.  Add the parsley.

Serve with bread.

The amount of bird’s tongue I have used in this recipe produces quite a heavy, thick consistency to the dish.  If you are looking for something a little lighter, you could half the amount of pasta used.

Dan,
LMAO!

What is a birds tongue? Am I missing something here?

Sound good by the way.

Rafed a birds tongue is the tongue of a bird. Lol Very delicate flavor But imagine how many birds go into One pot of stew

I was referring to this comment
"Sounds like you are a little bird lover so you are having a difficult time seeing things our way. But that's fine."

I never called you a bully, i said no-one likes one. I have not insulted you once. I have been polite.

Rafed- I responded to your questions about viewing a songbird "attack" my family, with the statement "I would laugh". Further I do think it its OK for the bird to protect it's family, to clarify.
Two of your questions are actually statements, so I cannot answer those.

I apologize for offending you.

I wish I had some orzo to make that recipe, I put it on the shopping list.

I prefer beef tongue. bird tongue might be to delicate for my taste. now feel like having some tongue sandwich...

How bout those figs????????

dennis,

don't know about the figs. still waiting for my first one to ripe. just got dive bombed by two birds while checking on VdB, i think they've been reading this thread.

KARMA!

Maybe I should go and buy a parakeet tomorrow to show the birds in my hood that I'm down with them.
Think they'll make peace?

I'll even stop eating chicken for six months, accept for Popeyes.

rafed,

what about thanksgiving? that's only 4 months away :)

I do not hate birds, I love all animals; cute, ugly, docile, or deadly.

Below is a baby robin that I saved at my neighbor's house.  It was stuck in a downspout and couldn't get out.  It would have died if I hadn't rescued it.  People who hate robins or hate birds don't do things like that.

Here is all anyone needs to know about me:  David slayed Goliath.  A virus, which is microscopic, can kill a human.  I don't care how small something is, little things can do great damage if you don't react accordingly.  I don't care how sweet a robin's song may be, nor do I care how cute it is.  If anything or anyone is attacking my home or my family - regardless how insignificant anyone may think the damage may be - bodily death or harm will follow.  End of story.

I am definitely not lacking in compassion.  I have very few rules I live by in life, and you just read one of them.  If folks don't like it, so be it, I'm sure there is nothing anyone will say to me that will make me change my rules or change my mind about it.  Same way I respect others' opinion and don't chastise them about over-loving creatures, regardless of the damage and harm they may cause.

This songbird below, a robin - of which are very aggressive in my area - is alive today because of me.  I won't hesitate to kill it later if it attacks me or my daughter or my house today, tomorrow or five years from now.

I said chicken, made no mention about Tom.

turkey's just a big chicken to me. unless you dress it up, marinated, or cover it with gravy, both taste like cardboard. tho, i love good fried chicken livers. got really upset when KFC stopped selling them. i would imagine they go well with fig.

I'm not trying to stir the pot or drag this on further, but I thought clarification could be helpful for the future, and maybe it would help explain my last post, which was basically targetted at the comments you've made (and I've highlighted) above.

Your commentary above seemed to blanket-stereotype everyone that was suggesting harm to the birds as a "bully", which pretty much implicated bullet, rafed and myself as being "bullies".

I am the king of saying things that are misinterpreted, so I figure it may be helpful to clarify what the issue appears to be to me ;)

None of the three of us are "bullies".  We have very, very, very little tolerance for animal aggression against us, our family and our dwellings.  There are people out there like that - they're not bullies, they're just intolerant of idiocy in humans, animals and laws alike (I'm sure).

That doesn't make anyone a bully.  That makes them intolerant of idiocy.
