Roundup in Sandy land for Young fig trees(update)g trees

Thanks.

You can try painting it with a paint brush to avoid drift, it takes time but it works well.

Roundup's active ingredient is glyphosate. It is absorbed through the tender portions of plants and is likely to be absorbed through the thin bark of figs. if roundup was having an effect on your trees you should be able to see yellowing of the leaves and a decrease in vigor anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks after spraying depending on how hot and dry the weather is. Figs dying a year after herbicide application is probably not attributable to roundup.

Roundup will burn back Bermuda grass but will not eliminate it. In my line of work we routinely try to eradicate Bermuda. The only herbicides that truly kill Bermuda are soil active and kill the roots. Unfortunately these herbicides would kill figs.

I have heard that nematodes are fig killer in the sandy soils of south Georgia. You might want to have your local extension agent test your soil to see if nematodes can be ruled out.

Post herbicide will kill Bermuda. It is labed for fig trees but you can not eat the figs until the next season.

Well I just finished putting Roundup on 3 of my in-ground plants, I used the paintbrush, but I just dobbed it on! It sprayed off the brush when I tried to paint the stuff on(had to quit that PDQ

After mechanically removing as much Bermuda as possible,

  1. mulch heavily four to six inches thick
  2. check frequently,
  3. pull up new sprouts and
  4. be patient.
If you are diligent with pulling new sprouts the underground part will die. It cannot survive without a green top feeding it. The mulch will conserve moisture for the fig and defeat the nematodes too! Anything sprouting in the mulch will be easy to pull up.

Well we will update ya'll on my use of the "new Roundup"

It looks like it is as good as the old Roundup I've been using!

I put it on with a paintbrush and was extra careful.....It appears that it has killed (or nearly killed ) my little Black Jack tree, It is starting to drop its leafs.

Luckily I have a backup :-))

So needless to say. this Ol' man is done with that stuff!
