Row of old fig trees in Georgia

Just returned from a road trip.  While in Georgia's peach tree and pecan territory, we stopped at a roadside stand near Valdosta.  There was a line of old fig trees in one of the fields that I just had to photograph.  These trees are 6 to 8 feet tall and appear to be very old and are apparently well pruned each year.  The store sold numerous fig products including whole figs in syrup, preserves, jelly, etc.  Fig type unknown.

Happy Easter!

Thanks for sharing. Really nice row of trees there!

Looks like someone is selling figs when in season, looking down the row there all trimmed evenly.
Thanks for the pictures.

great picture. thanks for taking the time.

They "are" really old fig trees...just look at the caliper on the trunks and on some of the branches...it takes a "long" time for a fig tree to get to that thickness...thank you for sharing two really interesting pictures.

Nice old trees; just wondering,  what happens to the branches when the trees are pruned? Imagine how many cuttings......

nice picture thank you for sharing, did you take any cuttings from the trees?

Very nice pics.  Did you happen to notice about how far apart these trees are?  Some  of us are planting fig hedges.  Spacing has been a big topic.

That is a real pruning by people who really know what they are doing! Thank you for sharing

Well done pictures.  Thanks for sharing.  I have wondered why we don't see more pictures of mature fig trees pruned for practical harvesting height.

I did not see the pruning.  There must have been thousands of cutting available.

I would guess the spacing was 20 to 25 feet between trees.

jerseyd,
Thanks for posting. Those trees have aged well and are well maintained.
Do you mind sharing the location of the store?

The address of the store is Ellis Bros. Pecans, Inc, 1315 Tippettville Rd. Vienna, GA

Exit 109 INTERSTATE 75 SOUTH. Turn left then first left to Tippettville RD.  Google marks the 1315 address approximately 1/4 to 1/2 mile before the location of the store on the left.  The row of fig trees are approximately 2-3 hundred feet before the store on the right.  They are visible on the satellite view on google maps.  The web address for the store is werenuts.com

Magnificent!

UPDATED: I just spoke with Ms. Ellis and the rows of trees in the pics have been there between 12-15 years and they do make
fig preserves and sale them at the store. One row is Brown Turkey of course and the other is Celeste.  They have two other fig
trees in the yard at the house that have been there over 50 years.

Those pictures are fantastic. I would love to have that line of them at my house.
Plant and Dream, right?

Nice detective work Mike.

Mike, I'm really surprised to hear that the trees are only 12 to 15 years old...with the thickness of the trunks and some of the branches, I would have thought they were a lot older than that...maybe it's the variety, or the soil and climate that makes them grow so fast...none the less, that is a beautiful row of fig trees.

I have two figs that were planted 5 years ago as three year olds and they have 5 - 6" trunks at the base and  2-3" main branches, I was surprised at how fast they turned into trees vs bushes, the trees are too big to cover, but fair well each year in this region. The trees made me wonder as an avid woodworker, what fig wood is like!   Vince, you have several cuttings from one of these trees.

Ok Jack...thanks for the info.

I was in the area today and stopped by this little country type store. Man, they have pecans to sell every way imaginable. Its worth the one mile drive off interstate 75 Exit 109 Vienna, Ga if you are ever down that way.

Also, here is a look at the same rows of fig trees that were taken in the winter #1 above

Those pics are great, Mike.  They look very healthy, even with the weeds around them.
