Rust??

Is this rust or weird FMV? Ignore white patch.

I have Tashkent from Raintree.

It grew about 6 inches and all the leaves looked like that or worse. I pinched after 6 leaves to encourage growth and figs. No figs and the new branching was severely deformed.

But a sprout from below the root line emerged and it is completely free of any signs of rust, deformity or FMV. I would still go with severe FMV but the root sprout has me second guessing.

I cut the top of the tree where it was and hope to see an improvement.

I pulled this out of the woods to show you what I have:

@jon
Very possibly FMV.
This I is what I observed with FMV suffering leaves (one to all symptoms):
(a) badly shaped leaves,
(b) different shades of green leaves,
(c) Leaves rather 'thick'  and 'sand-papery' - later showing some brown (mostly at the edges).
(d) stunt growth - plant in general)

My (now gone) Tashkent; also suffered severely form FMV.
Its tip slowly grew into a small circle, almost doing a self-knot - no kidding!
I wish I had taken a pic...

@alan
Please refrain from duplicating other people's pics, in the same thread; specially
right after the original. When the tread becomes large, there will be less
'scrolling' down to do - I personally, do not like unnecessary scrolling.

I also have a Tashkent fig from Raintree. One branch has put on about a foot of new growth with large leaves while the other branch is bent and growing into a near circular shape. The leaves on the main branch had been looking very healthy and green but are now starting to look like Jon's example. Flat, but discolored. I will try to upload pictures when I find my camera.

Rust usually eats up a leaf along the edge of the leaf not along the veins.

Hi Jon,
either FMV - i have not seen this pattern as of yet but could very well be.
or
Nutrient deficiency.

For nutrient deficiency i would think if any of your other plants are in same type of mix or growing inground close to each other they may display similar if not now maybe in near future..

Your thoughts Jon ?

Nypd - those leaves in my opinion display FMV ,
although at the stage picture was taken show crispyness (dry) to the leaves as well for whatever reason.
You can go to same plant next season in June and look at the leaves.

As a note i have some plants that were few inches tall grew 3-4 feet in first season with no FMV that i could notice.
This season it showed very well pn them.

Its interesting that alot are reporting on the same conditions for their Tashkent. The root sprout is healthy and has NO signs of anything. Beautiful leaves and growth. Has grown about 15 inches in 4 weeks. I'm going to ride it out for awhile.

That crispy look is due to being in the woods for a day before I went to retrieve it for the pics.

Dominick you mention

Dominick  i write this from my experiences only
What i have read in past about Fmv and my similar experiences watching FmV in my tree's the virus "tends" to move slowly.
This is why i see it on some branches and not on others on my plants.

As a note i have plants that were several inches tall at beginning of last season and grew 3-4 feet with no FmV that i could see.
Then this season it shows very well.

For some of my older plants the virus plays a game of hide and seek , a few show virus heavy early in season and late in season its there but hardly noticeable.

Its ok "for me" though as long as they produce good figs and dont drop i dont mind it at all.
Some of the best variety's have the virus.

I agree-If they produce good tasting Figs, who cares about the look of the tree.

Part of me wonders if I leave the sprout and cut everything else, will it give me a better chance to control it? But you are right- This season no sign but then it may just be as bad as this year on the original or worse next year (2012).

None of the ones near it show any sign of FMV and they have touched most of the season.

Dominick im sending you a PM
