My Sal's Corleone survived last winter unprotected, but along side of my home. Just the tips of a few branches were damaged by the cold, the tree was otherwise unharmed. Last winter was a bit of a rough one, pretty cold. I am in zone 6.

No Doubt Sal Corleone will survive the zone 6 winters,with little protection,like a couple of leaf bags around the trunk.
Bagged leaves is the easiest way I found to protect trees.
And if you do not have trees ,to collect leaves,other people do,and they are glad you take them.
Just make sure they do not have large dogs on property,so as the leaves are not clean.
If Sal Corleone is good or not in the south time will tell.

I say brunswick is more cold hardy but I would still use bags of leaves for cover, not much else.

I don't grow Brunswick, but if it is more cold hardy than SC it would seem a minimum of protection is all that is required such as Ed suggests.

I'll probably wrap it, just to make sure it'll survive. Temperatures here can drop to -5F (at nights) and stay around 20-30F for days.

I do have sal's Corleone from Herman, I got it last year..
This year I do have many figs on it.. We do have rain here for last two weeks..I pick my first one 2 days from now..I do have 2 more soon to be ready.. They don't split in a rain and very high humidity and they are big in size..
I will make tomorrow a pics..
I pick up my first one I think too soon..
I need to wait, but..I can't I wanted to try..
And I need to say a Big Thank You! to Herman for Marseilles VS he give me..
I real like this one too.. So, I think you need to get both of them..

Just how big are they?  Are they bigger than a golf ball?

Good to know they haven't split in the rain for you and I'm anxious to see the pictures.  And wait until you have a good, ripe one so you can tell me how it tastes?

Herman and Ed, when you speak of leaf bags for winter protection do you mean trash bags with leaves in them? Leaves still in the bags?

Leaves in bags is what I have done in the past

Yes Leaves in a bag for easy to use.
If you want to make more elaborate structure like chicken wire around tree and drop leaves there that is ok too.

They was good.. First one was good too, but skin near neck was kind tuff..
This two taste very good and skin was soft..

Sorry, I was late to work, so I eat them real fast..
But each was like combination of 3 different taste depend on part of a fig, but all together was very good, this one defenetly have unike taste..I real engoy this one.. And I glad I let this one sit this long on a plant..This way even skin was good to eat.. Too bad I can try in a same time few different varieties..
Seems like every day I pick 2, sometime 3 figs..
I wish I can pick up every day many more..
Hopefully one day my dream will come true..

Correct Noss.  SC, BC#31 is not the same as Scilian Black.  However, SC BC#31 is the same as Weeping and Martin's Unknown.  All 3 of these guys split just like Brunswick if there is too much rain.  My SC is loaded with figs.

Last year I try SC and Martin's UNK they are different, I have both of them..
Martin's UNk don't split last year.. But SC did..
I like taste of SC much better then Martin's UNk and Weeping..
My Weeping don't produce real good figs last year, they was kind small and don't taste great..
Please, tell me, why do you think this 3 figs are the same?
I do have lots of figs here and I think I do have many what have different names but they are the same, but I don't think this 3 are the same..

Hi Olga, good to see you posting again!! I don't have a weeping fig, but SC certainly does not weep. Dennis did you mean they share a splitting problem? I have not experienced much other than some minor eye splitting with my SC, wondering if it is more of a situational thing a soil difference or something else.  Of course last year was an exception as we had record breaking rains followed by a hurricane, every thing split.  

Olga, you could be correct about Martin's UNK not being the same.  I do remember only getting a handful of figs from my tree last year. But Weeping and SC put out a lot of figs last year.  My SC and weeping fig did split last year.  Maybe these 3 are not the same but SC and my Weeping does share the same splitting problem.  I'm tempted to dig my trees up and pot them in self watering pots this Fall.  I do like the flavor of SC figs.  My Martin's Unk died to the ground and grew back taller than last year!  It's going to be a good year for figs in my area.

Last year we did have here lots of rain but only few SC split.. Still this is one of my favorite figs..This year for some reason I only try few figs myself.. Nevid give me last year UNK Dark Greek and this one start producing first and continue already may be 3 month..Earliest fig and produce lots of figs..
My Sal's Corleone now start produce figs but they still green.. I try one on my Zingarella, this one another my favorite, loaded with figs and each year produce even better tasting figs then last year...
This is may sound strange..I'm in Florida but I do have late season this year..
I just now start seeing figlets on many of my figs..So, may be later I will be able to post something if something will taste real good and produce lots of figs..
Hopefully birds will leave my figs.. This is first year I do have problems with birds..

The Martins unknown i had 2 different ones .

Martins Unknown which may have been some sort of strain of brown turkey and displayed a huge eye i can say with certainty is not Sals Corleone.

The one called Martins Italian unknown which came from italy from a personal friend i had no idea what it was and also long gone from my yard.

When i posted i was going to burn them folks wanted some scion so i passed out some then burned the rest.

I just got a Martin's unknown from another member.  Martin, I'm guessing you burned them because they were not up to your standards. I can see burning the large eyed one, but what was wrong with the other? Olga, we had so much rain here, that virtually all of my trees were splitting figs. it was terrible, the smell of sour figs was in the air. When Hurricane Irene hit my basement and yard were flooded. Young fig trees were bobbing up and down floating around in my yard. Lost many succulent plants, a few fig starts, a large portion of my fig crop and most of my basement furniture.

My SC split in a eye.. But quarter pounder split like yours SC..
But..I think may be we all just need to wait and see if with age splitting will stop.. Taste in my Zingarella and Fracazzano real start be much better with age..This year Fracazzano start producing even different shape of figs if I can say so and taste very sweet..
But still even SC split, this is very good tasting fig..
I think now I do have around 1000 figs here and only few I real like and SC is one of them.. I will see if my SC will don't split this year and all I will send you cuttings this year around October, November, or if you like in a spring..
I'm watching figs here and sometimes I see figs with same names perform different..
For example..I do have few Negronne but this year I see couple what actually look real good and I think will actually grow and produce, not like other few..
Last year I don't have great success with cuttings from UCDA, but this year they real doing great, look very healthy, strong and grow well..
May be if cuttings was taken from plant with some kind health problem will continue to have problems after rooting too..
So, may be you just need another SC...
I now try to get few plants with same names and I see they do grow different, some doing great, some are don't...
