Sal's Corleone ripening figs (pic)

Here is my SC trying to ripen its figs, I don't think I will be able to give the figs a fair test in the size or taste because I used olive oil to start the ripening!
Thanks for looking
When the figs get fully ripe I will post pictures again
Edit.I'm adding a picture of my other little SC

You cheated and im telling the fig gods!
No really Cecil i hope they taste decent let us know .
You surely deserve it .
The color is very nice looking and such a beautiful picture , thanks for showing it.

Thanks Martin!
I hope the fig gods take it kinda easy on me(please forgive me fig gods)

As far as the beautiful pictures thank goodness for Point & shoot and macro settings...HEHE

Wow that was quick correct me if I'm wrong but has it been 2wks or less since you oiled I hope for all the best taste wise. That must of been some extra special extra extra EVO. If you have time can you explain what your process was, did you use a q-tip and only oiled eye etc... How long were they on the tree approximate if possible? Sorry just curious
Way To Go

Hi Sal,

I oiled last Monday

What I did was get an eye dropper full of virgin olive oyl HEHE

and put one drop on the eye(eye only) of each of the 5 figs, as of now 3 of those are showing different stages of ripening, I have did that procedure before with not too good of results as far as taste goes?

Now to the part where you asked how long had the figs been on it?, I would guesstimate about 70 days give or take a week or so.

Thanks Cecil I wouldn't have thought of an eye dropper

Eye droppers work on fig eyes to I guess....HAHA

I kick myself in the head for not thinking of that.

Shoot now my butt hurts
On a serious note did the fig swell any after the oiling or did it stay the same size?

Sal,

That pair of figs has about doubled in size since Monday

When I oiled the figs they were about the size of a quarter, maybe a tad smaller.

Well my Sal's Corleone figs(2) must be getting close to ripening

Both have split like a Mercedes Benz emblem

Uhhhhhh, I vaguely remember reading that a while back from another member!

I guess I will remove them tomorrow and take pictures
PS my tree has been protected from all the rain we have had.
Stay tuned for a NO HYPE report.

Congratulation Cecil
You have the right climate for growing this fig,I have no doubt.
Here is really the worse one most of the time.
Exactly when they suppose to ripe ,the 4 days continuous rain, and 97 percent humidity, come coupled with high heat, all at once.
You can see the fungus growing around the eye by just stearing at the fig for a few minutes.

Thanks Herman,

So far that fig has did more than I would have ever expected
As you know it was still on your mother tree in Nov 08

Now 11 months later it is going to give Fig picker & I at least a sample of what we can expect, although the taste will not be up to its potential because of the Olive oil treatment I did to it!

We have go to go to the Car dealer in the morning, some kind
of call back of some kind about the Air Cond. Dang, the thing didn't make it to 5 thousand miles before Dorcas wore it out!
Anyhow when we get back, assuming we make it back without breaking down, I will remove & take some pictures of the outside & inside of that Guy along with the weight.

Again, Thanks so much Herman for everything.
Cecil

Desperate times = Desperate measures

I did the same Cecil.
Heading out to San Diego in the morning, I might pay Jon a visit.

Rafed

Ok,

I pulled one of the Sal's Corleone off the tree today

I weighed it 30G

Then I cut it open and completely screwed up !/2 of it!(should have screwed up the other 1/2

so I took as good of a picture of it that I could

Then I gave it the much anticipated taste test
I don't think I ever tasted a fig that tasted so bad in my life
I am going to blame it on the heavy rains we have been having for the last two weeks and my brilliant Idea to use the olive oil on it!
I will be more patient next year, but I score the taste as -1(not even close to being sweet like a fig should taste.
EDIT.......Fig picker just came in from running & shopping
I saved her 1/2 of that fig, cause we are partners don't ya know
Now Fig picker does not have a foul mouth, but she damn near done it on that fig......HAHAHA

Cecil,
all in fun in this post.  ; )
I give you an A+ for trying the oil .
I give you a D- for not waiting as i think you might have gotten a naturally ripe fig in your zone as i still have (mybe a few weeks left in mine.
Like i said all in fun.
You had to try the olive oil trick and i dont blame you cause you had a trying season andd wanted to cover all bases, i did that olive oil trick as well several years back and had similar results but i did with a lot of em and they all were yuck so i never try anymore i just suffer now if they dont ripen.
But thanks for taking the time posting pictures and showing honest results.
I can bet a fig plant that next year if you have decent weather that fig inside will look nothing like it did this season nor will the taste.
Bet???

HAHA
Martin, I know you are right on all of that EXCEPT the part where
ya gave me a D-

I will give you a chance to grade me one more time, this time put an F on me followed by the word 'up'

No no i never give an f for that to me mean no effort what so ever which i obtained a lot in High school hence me dropping out, my fault there.
But you put in a heck of effort and tried!!!
Shoot maybe i was being a little harsh because i had a feeling of the outcome so now instead of downgrade as you suggest i give you  D+
but still A+ on trying .  : )

Thanks Martin,

But I really think I deserve the F up----- grade on this one!

But it is better to laugh than to cry HUH?

Cecil sorry that it didn't work out but at least you gave it a shot. Thanks for the honest post also I'm sure next year will be better

All the Best
SAl

Thanks Sal,

I told ya'll I would give a "no hype" report

Little did I know, it also was gonna be a "no taste" report

I know one thing, there won't be anymore fig oiling for me.

Hi Dan,

I had just about recovered from my eating that nasty tasting fig by the time Dorcas got back home, I had that fig all fixed up and waiting for her to sample.

I swear to God, I wish every FF member could have saw the look on her face.........It is still funny, she didn't think so.STILL DON'T
Might as well laugh as to Cry

PS I have two more just about ripe, I told her she could have both of them figs, there ain't a stingy bone in my body, I tell you she DON'T LIKE them figs so far, she told me where I could "stick" that fig, I don't think I will try to do that.
And my trip to JR has been set off until Friday, JR had something he had/wanted to do tomorrow, not a problem on my part

Speaking of sharing the Olive oil thing with JR

He called me the day before yesterday, I saw on caller ID who was calling, I said hello James Ro Bin, he said who am I talking to, I said Cecil Davis in East Tx. he said why am I talking to you, now remember HE CALLED ME, I told him, beats the He?? out of me, Then he wanted to know about how that Olive Oil works? I told him I got an eye dropper and put one drop on each eye, he told me you couldn't find eye droppers no mo, I said sure ya can, Murine eye water still uses them, he told me there wasn't anything wrong with his eyes!
I think the Ol Boy is snooping online! Maybe lookin at Gurls

Opelousas ain't gonna be the same after our visit with him Friday.

Hi Cecil:I also had the same experience about 5 yrs ago,and I never oiled figs again.
Of course I posted at the time.
I also have one Sal's Corleone getting ripe now,(Without oilling)yet we had the worse, cold raining weather Possible, and it is cracked ,splitted ,again, toghether with every other cultivar that is getting ripe in the last week.
Gino's fig is doing a little better, with some splitted and some not.
I can't blame the figs, the weather was teriblle for a month now for figs.

Best Regards
H2

Hi Herman,

I can blame five things at least on the Corleon'e behalf

#1 Me
#2Me
#3 rain everyday for two weeks, although it is protected on the front porch!
#4 Olive Oil
#5 me again

IT IS NOT fair that the little Guy should have to put up with that dilemma.

cecil if you visit jr on friday, tell him mike from florida says hey. :).
