Sal's Corleone ripening figs (pic)

Be glad to Mike!

It's a done deal.

Cecil you mention Opelousas wonld not be the same after your visit. You mean to say you are bringing on the army w troopers from your hayfield? I better tip JR to have 2 pots of coffee ready -- one the great delicious Opelousas coffee in case you behave well and ONE the great SEND away. ha-ha-ha. Hey the Texan joke was fun. I got to find one to even the score. Wished I had known more about the olive oil. I did that to my figs because the weather was unusually cool & raining. Bingo, the main crop is ripening so fast. I tasted 3 figs yesterday & has tinge of sweetness and if the rest are likewise, this would be a good lesson.  Have a good trip.

Cecil, we have same size , age and plant .
Next year will be fun to compare the plant overall  growth, fruit quality, etc, etc, in our much different climates, Texas and Illinois.

Hi Paully,

No the Army worms have just about did all they are going to do to the hayfield, the Guy that takes care of the hayfield heavily fertilized the other day and at the same time put down Sevn dust

The birds are having a feast, hope the sevn dust don't kill them.

Martin,

Which two are the same? the SC?

Yes sal c.

Then yes it will be interesting comparing the two

But ya gotta remember, I'm somewhat of a Rookie!

We can start rat now, my SC had 5 figs on it, how about yours?

BTW Martin,

My Sal's EL is at a standstill (no new growth)

MY H.C is coming on pretty good right now!
Later

Well, I just pulled the last of the SC figs that had turned red off the little plant.......and yes I tasted them, about the same, not good, there are two more on it that didn't take to the Olive oil
I will leave them on.......who knows, they might not be as bad as the other 3 were.....There's always next year.

Cecil,
you said this
Then yes it will be interesting comparing the two

But ya gotta remember, I'm somewhat of a Rookie!

 My reply,
i had the same amount they came out with a slight reddish around the head of fig but C

Cecil, i actually had the same amount and few more itsy bitsy ones but i had to knock them off because of my climate which is starting to show its ugly side.
I want plant to keep its energy for the upcoming winter not for making figs which would not ripen for me , the plant i feel is to small at this part of season compared with say ronde or portuguese plant which grew to 4 ft and i left figs on cause i dont worry about them this winter. Im sure yours should do better in your climate and also because you grow inground and have the longer season as opposed to a restricted pot in which i grow them in, a plus for me is i dont have to worry about gophers, worms, rkn, and all most of them other critters you have.
What i meen by comparing our alike plants is if there are any difference between them like leaves, fruit color in and out and taste.
But i know you know not how many figs we make, heck i cant compete with your climate and anyones inground plants what so ever.
Plus your no rookie and im not expert, all i do is stick em in them pots give em a drink with some reduced MG and lime and mother nature does the rest.  ; )
So eat your olive oil figs if any left ( he he)--- humor Cecil.   i tried to tell ya how they would come out from past experience!!!  ; )~

WOve ya Babe!
PS : yes we call guys Babe too.

Martin, I ain't fixin to call ya babe!OK

My plants that are in pots now, gonna stay in pots until Spring of 011........So if I have Gophers and RKN that can jump up 4 feet onto my dang porch, then all I can tell them is have fun!
But I will say this, I wouldn't trade locations with you if I could grow 5 pound Figs UP THERE.......I been there remember?

Edit.....I went out and knocked my one and only HC fig off the tree as well as one Guilbeau, and all but the biggest 5 on my little VdB
I left 2 SC on, and 5 VdB.........I might add, I hated to do that!

All joking aside we can compare them next year!

Cecil, does your Sal's EL & HC leaves look the same to you ?

Paully,

My Sal's EL has some FMV and so far the HC is not showing any that I can see, I do think the look very similar though!

Well I pulled all the figs except two off The Sal's C

Now they are showing signs of ripening!

They didn't respond to my brilliant idea of doing the olive oil treatment....thank goodness, I'm wondering if I should try to talk Fig Picker into one more last taste test on the SC figs this year!??? Now the little guy is putting on nice new top leafs as well as my VdB.

Hi everyone,

We have gotten another Fig off our little Sal's Corleone

We were pleasantly surprised with how much better the fig tasted today over the first ones that I ruined by using olive oil to speed up ripening, I won't be doing that anymore on this fig or any other fig.

The fig had sealed its eye with honey!
I might have rushed picking it by a day or so! But we still have one in the ripening stage that I will leave on longer.
The fig didn't split at all.

It was a little smaller than the first ones,
Wt 22G
now to the important stuff
we gave it a score of 6 that is a lot more than our first grade.
Thanks for looking.

Cecil,
its great that you were able to get a taste.

Thanks for sharing the pictures and it will be fun to look back at this thread next season with new pictures of your same plant with figs ripening again. With good weather next season your figs will be even better from this plant as well as other young plants as they slowly start to mature has been my experience.   ; )

Yep I know Martin,

I can't wait until next year, that is almost wishing my life away!

that is not good for someone that will be 73 next year (me)

Okay Cecil, 72 and counting, so what? You're still a spring chicken, enough with the negative attitude! Enjoy it! Glad you got a taste of your SC. At least you had sense enough to by the real one--I'm 56 and sorry to say, didn't have that much sense! Ha!

Well Tim, we are all still learning, an Cecil has had longer to learn than some of us, hehehe

Hi Tim,
Spring chicken my foot :-)
You guy's are killin me

I did buy my cuttings of the SC from a very honest Man

Herman2

Ah Cecil your a well oiled Texan!
Enjoy each day and as you gander outdoors to admire your beautiful fig trees and take the time to smelll a flower.  ; )

PS. Dont forget to gove Dorcas a big hug , shoot you owe it her after having her eat that dang blasted oiled fig you fixed up.

Hi Martin,

As a matter of fact I hug Dorcas every day, good part is she hugs back!

And yes she wasn't goofy about giving that fig we had yesterday a taste test, I don't know why she would be gun shy about the SC figs, I would NEVER play a trick on her......HAHA

The fig has room for improvement, but it was a whole lot better than the first ones we tried.

Cecil :22 grams,is much smaller than they should be.
That tell me your tree is still very juvenile.
Next year they should be much larger, and I am sure they will.
Something like 45,to 50 grams for this cultivar.
In your climate I see no need to oil any cultivars.
H2

Thanks Herman,

I can't hardly wait until next Spring, yes as you know my plant was only a 6" cutting in the first of Jan. this year.

And there will be no more olive oil treatment from me on my figs ever again,
