Sal's Corleone & Synonyms

Hello everyone,

I believe that Sal's Corleone is ONE of MANY closely related varieties in the same family of figs.

The varieties:
Sal's Corleone
Aldo's Palermo Red
Sicilian Red

Acciano
Robin's Sicilian Black
Sicilian Black JR
GM #17
Weeping Black
Black Triana
St. Jerome
Vincenzo
Columbaro Nero
Bella
Brooklyn Dark
Panevino Dark
Enrico
Chico Malibu
Nardi Black

Some of these are probably identical to another and some probably have very minor differences in variation, which is why these "Sal's Corleone" types (for lack of a better name) should be treated similarly to how Hardy Chicago and the many other Mt. Etna/Mongibello family of figs should be treated; if you have room, grow them all. If not, pick out your healthiest 1-3 and grow those.

I urge you to do your research on each variety, but these threads show the truth:

Good info, Ross! I wish I had a farm...i would grow every single one :-D! But I agree with your advice!

Hey Ross:
Excellent work!
This really helps to eliminate a lot of multiples.
Of those you listed, these are some of the varieties which I grew side-by-side and determined that their leaves and fruit are the same:

Aldo's Palermo Red
Sal's Corleone
Sicilian Black
Black Weeping
Chico Malibu
Panevino Dark
Acciano
Clem's 8-Ball
I'm still trialing St. Jerome and Zingarella. I have a strong suspicion that the Zingarella from the Watts collection may also be the same as the others.

Great post Ross!
Love the taste of these figs not sure why we don't hear more about them.
I have had a lot of luck growing Sal's C. and Sic Black no FMV/D symptoms.  They both grow very well for me and look similar.  But the Sicilian Black JR has a richer flavour and produces tons of brebas.  Sal's C hasn't produced as many breba and is a slower grower.
Thanks

Leon,

I was told Zingarella is more of an Etna type.

For some reason, there are different Zingarellas out there.
The one from R. Watts is NOT a MtEtna type 100%
