Sal's Figs

Acquired some cuttings from Just Figs back a few months ago, most all were lost to mold. These Sal's were transplanted from perlite to mix and have survived but this one Corleone, I have to say is my favorite tree far as looks.  I love the glossy leaves. It was up-potted to the air pot on 11/29.

I have sal's g its one of my favorite figs. Had a sal's c but it didn't make it past rooting stage. I hear its a good one.

I don't meant to sound redundant but... can someone post pics and different Sal's xxxs info please. I has become somehow confusing for me. So, is there Sal's, Sal's C, Sal's S, Sal's G , Sal's L...how many are there and what do they look like exactly?

And who is or was Sal?  What's the story?

Woah I had no idea those figs were named after a guy. I always wondered why they all had "Sal's" in their names, but I guess it's starting to make sense for the first time to me right now lol I'd love to hear his story too.

There are 2 basic Sal's...Corleone (C) and Sal's, often with GS (Gene's Selection), EL (Edible Landscaping), etc added to it. Sal's is an Mt Etna type similar to HC, Corleone is not. Both originate from Sicily though. Lots of a Sal's from Sicily, I guess.

Here is some info on the lineage of Sal's from an old NAFEX post: "Years ago a guy named Sal who was successful growing a fig in Connecticut sent me a couple of cuttings. He didn't know the name of it so we called it "Sal's Fig". It has become rather popular and is available from several sources (or at least they say it is a "Sal's Fig".)"

Sal's Corleone is a Belleclare fig, allegedly with a melon-honey flavor.

Search function should yield plenty of pics of fruit etc.

I have as labeled from various sources; Sal's, Sal's Corleone, Sal's EL, Sal's G and Sal's Gene.  So they are only two distinct varieties and some say really close to Hardy Chicago.  Sounds good to me. :)

Dave, do Sal's G and HC taste different to you? Most say they are pretty much the same with differences being slight.  I have both Sal's G and HC, but haven't tasted them both; only tasted HC. I'll get to taste Sal's G next year and compare for myself. I just love HC so much that I thought, heck yeah I'll take more like that. Not to mention that Sal's G is supposed to be a touch more cold resistant than HC.

Here in my climate my hc taste like a sugary plum very good. Now my sal's g on the other hand is way better. Soft peachy nectorine taste that fades to berry under tones, pleasant seed crunch. One if not the best fig I have.

Sal's Corleone, 2 years old.

Survived the winter vortex, with wet feet, in a pot.

Came back nicely this year could be a candidate for a step over project. No fruit yet due to die back.

Looks good Charlie.

Aaron, there's only two plants. Sal's C and Sal's G. Sal's G is aka Sal's El and Sal's GS.

thanks Calvin, so, REDO;

Sal's C  =Corleone................................................................................................Belleclare fig, from Sicily (NOT a Mt Edna fig), Mellon Honey flavor, color..?, pics
Sal's G(Gene) or GS (Gene's Selection)  (AKA Sal's EL =Edible Landscaping).....Mt Edna fig, from Sicily ,                                ,flavor                       , color..?, pics

So, are these figs Bifera or Unifiera?

Can you guys help me complete the mini chart on Sal's series?
That way we would've recorded a completed Sal's  fig variants.
I'll edit as we get more info together regarding this issue.
Thanks

I read that "Sal's Corleone" is also known as "Schar Italian".  I tried "SI" (from Durio Nursery) here in Zone 7/NYC.  It died over the 1st winter (potted).  I've also read that "SC" can be prone to splitting in rainy weather....but, all figs have some quirks.  It is what it is.

Good luck and happy growing.

Frank

Good to see your post Frank! Happy Holidays.

Thats not what I wanted to hear. I was hoping to someday complete my wish list and stop at that point LOL. I have HC and love it but if this is way better then it must be added.
