I know I promised air layers to several people but they are just not cooperating. I may have to send cuttings instead. Sorry

Frank,

These look great. I would think anyone would be happy with receiving a start in any form.

That is a beauty, Frank. Though I hadn't heard of it before, by your photos and description, it will go on my 'hope to trade for' list. Thanks for posting.  Gary

Nice looking tree.

Beautiful tree.  Beautiful figs!  So, describe the delicious flavor.

Wonder why it's not giving you success on air layers.  I always thought that was 100%.  Guess not.

Suzi

Frank, that is very nice looking.

Hi Suzi, thanks. The air layers are being ripped apart by the mockingbirds for one thing. Also, because the branches are full of figs, the tips have not been growing. Lastly, I think I lost my touch.

Taste? Well, when San Donato first hits the tongue, you get the impression of a light, effervescent, capricious, little thing flirting with you..a passing fancy...eye candy. But then the second wave washes over the taste buds. Bam! This is serious, substantial, rich, full-bodied intelligent fig marrow teasing the olfactory and gustatory receptors as it passes the mouth on its way to the esophagus.
In a word..exquisite.

SOLD!!

Frank

I know it is just a typo probably, but the town in Cosenza province, Calabria where this fig comes from is spelled "Ninea."

Thanks, for the correction. I usually just shorten it to San Donato. And yes, this is one of many superb figs from Calabria, and more specifically Cosenza.

Frank, you're "illing" me bro.

Ditto Rafed. Can I trade a salmon for it LOL.

Nice fig,
I was born in Calabria, and yes the figs there are really delicious, weather ,soil have a lot to do the way those figs taste.San Donato is a small town in Calabria.Ciao,Giuseppe

Very nice.....wow

A fig that gorgeous has to come from a countryside that breathtaking. Very nice!

So what are the others in your top 10-15?

Bob, the list shifts with the changes in the season, but I would say that most of my top figs are Mount Etna types which include, MBVS, nj red, Gino's, hardy Chicago, Bethlehem Black, sal's, etc.

VDB, RDB, KB, Socorro Black, Stallion, Alma, Petit Negri, magnolia ( yes the much maligned magnolia) are on my list too.

Of course there are many, many more I am waiting to sample like the col de dames, ischia black, Maltese falcon etc etc.

Wow! I don't if you were describing a fig or something else. Both the fig and collection location is beautiful!

Threads like this make me wonder if terrior will become a more prominent topic over time? I've read a lot focused on heat, rain, fertilizers/compost, but haven't seen a lot about the impact of different soils and locations on flavor development. These pictures are all incredibly beautiful. Thanks for sharing!

Good looking fig!
