Sanford (not Stanford) from Fanicks

Hi All,

There was a post earlier this year in the "other" forum asking about 'Sanford'  It is a yellow fig with a red, seedy interior.  It is a good grower and appears to be quite fruitful.  It has a good fig flavor and is sweet, but neither is overpowering.  I'd say it is in the top 20% for first year figs, and even higher for light colored figs (from memory as I did not have any other yellow figs ripen yet this year).

It's a one ugly sweet tasty looking fig. :-)

Thanks for sharing.

I think it's ugly for a couple of reasons.

  1. as the weather cooled off, we have a lot of morning dew.  many of my trees were stricken with leaf rust.  So the spots are probably the same fungus that causes the rust.  I've seen this before in Houston with 'Atreano' from Paradise Nursery.
  2. well, I suppose I was expecting it to be a dark fig.  I didn't check for ripeness until I saw one on the ground.  So they stayed on the tree a bit longer than they should have.

Well that explains why they call it Sanford. Fred Sanford from Sanford and son. You Ugly!

there has been more than a few times when I walk buy the tree, the theme song gets stuck in my head.  now I need a tree named 'Archie' and I can relive my childhood TV watching.

James,

With over 300 channels cable has to offer why would you want to go back?
O.K., 290 of them channels are worthless!

Don't forget Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley!

James,
How did your Sanford do for you this year?
Mine has grown like a weed but not a single fig this year.

You guys watch too much TV is my conclusion. Why not do something exciting, like watching a fig tree grow. Ha.

If this is the case I think I should name my short fat uk Benny after Benny Hill.

i'm naming all my figs after character names from barney miller.
