Santa Cruz Dark Timeline Pictures

Here i document what i ordered as santa cruz dark scion from ucdavis from scion to now. 2 plants rooted one of them did not come out of dormancy this spring. Both were stored right next to each other.

The dates in those clickable thumbnails are correct.
I have read on some websites this is a san pedro type fig and
ucdavis list as common fig.
Here is 1 main crop fig that just started yesterday (one picture) the rest are pictures from today.

Dieseler,
Is the Santa Cruz Dark going to get darker or it is just the name?

PS: Yes, F4F variety pictures does give wide colour spectrum to ripe Santa Cruz dark!

I guess I'm color blind or there seems to be something wrong. But I must say there is something about a bright yellow fig that gets my attention. I can almost taste the honey. Nice tree Martin, I'm sorry you lost the other. I hope it has flavor to satisfy your dark fig palate.

Akram it will get darker .

Gene Gene Gene
you say

Gene im sorry but this one wont get your attention as a pretty yellow fig.  ; )

Seriously i can tell it will be the dark not the santa cruz white, i start to see faint color in the ribs unlike the white which has none in pictures.
Now it may not be a super dark fig but in the dark class.
It should be similar to first row on Jon variety page.

Here are 2 pictures  Pastiliere when i first notice signs of it starting similar to santa cruz , you can follow those ripeing stages as well in my other posts there dark types also.

My Santa Cruz Dark should look similar in the ribs tomorrow i post pictures again to see.

As the song goes...........I once was blind, but now I see.
Thanks Martin,

Here is same fig august 18th .
I also show some leaves of plant and another fig to the trained eye in its very earliest stages of increase in size.
To note
i do notice the eye colors late from being white.

To hopefully help some members new to growing figs -
figs come out and continue to grow to a certain size and stay this way until they move to stage - starting to ripen.
Then its noticed fig will increase in size sometimes overnight after waiting several months at least and go through its changes.
I watch some of my newer trees im not familar with for first signs of this other wise if the fig start to color and not increase in size at all it will continue to color and fall eventually a very frustrating experience after waiting all season. Its happened to me as i had a tree that did this for 4 years and now is gone.
Im no expert and never will be one and i know some may say yes yes same ole story about figs, but i feel there are some newer members that just read the post and not speak up because of inexperience - dont be afraid to ask questions there are members here that will help and not throw figs at you.  ; )

I was kinda hoping they would throw figs, and cuttings..lol

Today August 18th, fig taken on a slightly more rounder shape as it continues to fill out.
There are about 4 total i have noticed that are just starting to go through there changes on plant.

Same fig 2 days later.

Here is example of some more on same tree just starting out, some in very very early stage turn shade of lighter green as they start to swell .
Tree is young in second season and the original fig that i show the pictures of getting ripe in above post is taking its time before i can pick thats ok because i have weather wise and want to see this fig fully ripen.

One week since the very first sign of seeing this fig start something , still hanging on.
Here is picture of pair on same plant catching up quickly and there are a few others doing the same also now.

This morning i found fig had fallen onto the potting soil landing right on it head.
I brushed of the soil took pictures and slowly ate it.
What i tasted was a mild hondew dew taste  and lots of sweetness mixed in.
The aftertaste i did not care for.
Have you ever been in restaurant and used the fake sugar by mistake in coffee?
Well i did and i hate that stuff because i dont like the after taste it leaves in  mouth.
This was similar but not nearly as strong but there for some reason.
Now this is the very first fig ever this tree produced and not a good judgement im sure how the figs will actually taste . There are more figs on tree near ripe stage.
So in short if i had to go by very first fig and its impression i would get rid of it, some might really like it , but so far not impressed i like a fig that taste like a fig - figgy -  thats just me though.

I give tree "chance " after all its only first fig - but i have bad feeling about this .
Will update when i taste the others.

Forgot to mention fig weighed 28 grams.

Martin congrats on your first fig and sorry to hear its not exactly what you were expecting. Unfortunately I know how that feels I guess you have to be patient and give it another season to see if it improves to your taste buds. Its a nice looking fig though.

martin try one pealed and see if you get the aftertaste could be in the skin or up the neck toward the stem area..Just my 2 cents.

I never get too close to stem area when eating them probably cause i eat so many figs daily, when i eat whole fig i part of the neck with forfinger and thumb and stop before i bite my finger tips , cut in half its different but i still dont go that close.

I have close to 2 dozen to try by seasons end and will try one with skin off to see out of curiosity.
It will take a dramatic change in taste for me to keep this tree and may not give it another season after i taste the other 2 dozen.
It will get chopped up and scion put up for auction .

I dont mean to sound like a Donkey's butt .
Im just to picky with figs taste while some might have a wider range of taste they enjoy - nothing wrong with that we all are different,
im finicky i suppose.

I look for certain taste and i dont see this one going that way its the opposite of what i look for,  unlike Vdb, Dark Port etc, right away the first fig those produced deep down i knew these were going to be to my likeing as they had that taste i long for, long as crop did not drop then those and others i keep.
No big deal for me i cant like em all .
