Hi All,

I pruned the Chico Strawberry/Saratoga fig this weekend if anyone wants cuttings. $10 donation to the Foundation for 3, includes shipping. Most are tips cuts.

Looks like a nice fig, Sue!  Only two figs I'm willing to add to my collection, and although this one looks great, I'm sticking to my convictions!  Besides, JD will kill me If I get more cuttings!!

Yea, it's a sweet fig. I love it's sweet, peachy flavor. The red ostiole is especially cool. The figs light up the tree with all those red spots, looks festive!

Looks beautiful.

Does anyone in other locations know if this fig is at all cold-hardy OR if it is rain and split resistant?

It is real hardy fomy climate. Mine is in a large 15g pot. The figs are great tasting. It does split a litttle but not much. Mine stays outside every year.

Dennis - does splitting tend to be a problem in general (not just this fig) in your area?  My area (outside of Hilo, HI) is humid and can be pretty wet at times but I am thinking of trying it anyway.  Worst case, I can always graft something else onto it & give away the cuttings to growers on the dry side of the island.  Does this fig have an open eye?

All packages were mailed out today. I didn't realize Monday was a holiday so if your package does not arrive in good shape due to the weather and the extra time in the mail, I will resend. Just let me know. Thank you for your support of the Foundation.

Sue, this is terrible!  Did you send to that seller?  Guess you can't suck em back, but I'd like to know his real name (which you should have) so I never send him any cuttings.  Sucks big time! 

I guess you can't stop people from selling on Ebay, but flipping cuttings seems really wrong.

That kinda stuff [reselling cuttings for a profit] makes me really sad and disappointed. I would have loved to buy (and have that money donated to the foundation) and actually grow those cuttings. I'm very new and already have a few cuttings going at the moment and have zero room left. I was very, very tempted to try yours, Sue. This forum has been so crazy generous and kind to those starting out in the fig growing hobby and I would hate if one day the kindness just stopped.

I agree with you nepenthes.  We all get our cuttings either from UC Davis, trading, or paying for them.  I could see selling cuttings on Ebay once your cuttings have growin into a producing tree that you can actually post a photo of, but flipping is wrong.

I doubt the kindness will stop, but we might see some disclaimers on offers such as this:  "It is understood that any cuttings you receive from me will not be flipped for profit on any selling forum such as Amazon or Ebay."  Sad to have to put a disclaimer like that on any cutting offer, but it may be necessary.

Who knows?  Sucks!

Unfortunately I do not believe 77peony is flipping/reselling cuttings! These are from some arbitrary fig tree s/he's fraudulently claiming as 'whatever' the current fad fig is. 77peony does NOT have Chico Strawberry.

Alma, I have 3 baggies stuffed with tip cuttings in the refer so there's still plenty left...tempt, tempt, tempt... :-) I have no idea what I'm going to do with them all. Somebody help me. ;-)

I suspect you are right, Sue.  Ebay is full of thieves and weasels.  I do not doubt that they check forums for unusual clones and look for what is a hot item in bidding and then claim that the cuttings they are offering are one of the desirables.  (Ever notice that something that just went for a lot of money often just pops up from another supplier a few days later?)  Unless the clone is unusual vegetatively in some way, no one would suspect until they grow it big enough to get representative leaves and/or fruit.  By then, it is way too late to file a grievance with ebay.  There is a guy doing the same thing with rare tropical fruits out of Singapore -- everyone knows he is a thief and he has been booted from ebay repeatedly but he keeps coming back somehow...

Ebay is really a buyer beware zone.  If I can't find a recommendation for the seller on this forum, I am no longer bidding on cuttings.

Sue, if I didn't already have so many trees, I'd be tempted.  Sounds like a really good variety. 

I've got cuttings on the way, and trying to find places for the potted ones to go in ground.  You'd think with 1.5 acres, there would be lots of room, and there is, but part of it is not accessible due to steepness and boulders.  Part has no irrigation.  That's the bottom of the hill where the seasonal stream is and halfway up the other hill.  Lots of native growth in that part and really hard to navigate.  I thought of trying to root some extra cuttings (fresh from my trees) under some boulders and see it they will grow in the dark dampness with no water at all.  They seem to do that in the wild. 

One day a year or so from now, if I learn to graft, I might take you up on some cuttings.

I guess a tip-off that something just doesn't smell right about this is that 77peony is currently selling about 20 varieties and uses the same two photos for all of them.

Sue, you're terrible, lol. I really, really want some especially after your "peach" description. I think my husband has had enough with me converting house space for my new fig growing happiness. And the little bits of money going here and there (lots of Home Depot trips and paypal transactions). And me talking about branching out into other fruits.. which is because of this forum, too. It's been exciting, for sure, watching these "sticks" slowly turn into trees. I want more x_X

Forgot to mention, I shipped these cuttings in damp coir. You can leave them alone and let them root in that or rinse and root in your favorite medium.

   This is a generous, tempting offer I wish I could accept, but have made a conciliatory agreement with my spouse; I don't acquire any more and she doesn't throw any out. (Ouch.) However, I just wanted to recognize again the largess of members and hope that the unscrupulous do not deter us from our charitable natures.

  Perhaps there needs to be a thread where we can all report the unscrupulous and use it for reference before providing them with stock.

Hi Sue, I thing what you are doing for the foundation is wonderful , maybe next year when I have some cuttings I will be doing the same thing, but I don't see it offensive if someone wants to buy my cuttings and donate $ 10.00 to the foundation and turn around and do whatever they want whit the cuttings, I would say sent him more as long as he is willing to pay the price. ( sorry if I missed something) please excuse my English I am originally from Italy and I never went to school here.

Yes, this is a great thing to do. I wish I could take advantage of it. Unfortunately, there's a multitude of reasons why I have to pass. I do hope you'll do it again next year.

That it flushes out the scammers is a big benefit. The flipping cuttings is one issue. If they donate $10 for cuttings and then only get a $5 bid on ebay, well, they got what they deserved. If, as it seems to have happened here, they see a variety spoken well of here, and then try to pass off a cutting of some other variety as that one... that's taking it to a much higher level. From aggressive greed to fraud.

Having a thread, like Harvey's, to identify suspected scammers is a good thing, and, we need to keep it up to date when things like this happen. Having everyone from the forum who does sell on ebay put a caution in their cutting description telling potential buyers to check the forum before they buy is something we need to encourage. Ebay isn't policing properly, and all of figdom suffers if entry level buyers get burned.

Thanks for what you're doing here. If it wasn't valuable that lowlife wouldn't be trying to copy it for profit. Each of you is showing off your own personal quality by the offer you're making. Those of who try to be informed do appreciate you.

Hi Sue and all fellow fig lovers.  This is my first post.  So, I hope I'm not out of line when I ask how I might route a donation.  I promise you, I'm not one of those evil flippers lol. Those pics look so beautiful and yummy.  I'd love try to graft it to my 30 y/o black mission which I recently stumped back (I left some very long 2 and 3 y/o "suckers" for espalier).  Of course I'd like to root a cutting also.  

2 weeks ago, I grafted Rdb and Vdb to it.  I can't say they show any signs of life yet. I am almost ready to transplant: Rdb, Vdb, Panache, Flanders.  I plan to personally stimulate the over-sized terracotta pot industry with my visions for a fig garden of eden.

 I've been reading this forum and studying fig growing nearly everyday now for the last couple months.  So clearly, I too have been infected with the fig mania.  

So, may I please???                             

BTW, I think a perfectly ripe black mission is fantastic fruit.   Am I about to learn how deprived I've been?

Welcome to the forum Tim with your first post. It looks like you are off and running with the grafting. The two varieties that you grafted are great and mission, in my opinion, is a keeper also.

You're right about the Mission but there are many varieties that are superior.  Chico is different but only you can decide which you like better.
