Saving a fig tree in Brooklyn

Matt, great job!  We need more people like you saving fig trees!!!  The sucker will be fine.  Just keep them out of full for awhile.  Anytime we disturb a tree during the growing season, it will look sad a while until the roots settle down.  Nice job man!  Keep up the good work!

cheers,

You can always give the suckers some superthrive, which will stimulate root growth/ help with transplant shock.

Thanks Dennis, appreciate that. Becky - too late for transplant shock, thanks though.

Update 8/18/15:

Suckers look done, i will leave them in pots and see if anything comes from them, but i doubt it - they have been in total shade outside since day 1. Even that one cutting with all the roots that i pulled up hasn't made any movement yet, still rooting for it. Hopefully i didn't water log it :(

I have lost 4-5 cuttings due to mold and water being water logged, i pulled them out of medium and saw little white bugs crawling all over and the bark was basically rotting. So now i am down to 9 cuttings and only 6 show some top growth. I have also moved my humidity chamber outside due to the presence of fungus gnats starting to show up, so being outdoors in shade should help. Here is a shot of my cuttings that are moving along

Matt,
Too bad about the suckers but you can always wait and see (fingers crossed). Your cuttings are looking good. With 6 actively growing cuttings I say the rescue mission was a success, congrats!

Update 9/8/15:

I am down to 4 cuttings that lived from initial batch. I just transferred the 3 guys from the 1 gallon in perlite to a 5-1-1 mix this weekend, they had very small amount of roots but took transfer well and look perky (pics below). The little cutting with tons of roots on it, i thought it was a goner and finally have some leafing out, so happy about that.

I went to visit the mother tree this weekend for labor day and holy cow did it grow, no ripe fruits yet though. There are shoots everywhere, some are over 12ft tall...possibly 14ft. Seems like things are getting worse with house situation though, door looked to be broken down and i heard the old ladies came the other day to pick up some stuff. I plan on going back in a few weeks hoping some fruit might be ripe so i can take pics and do some tastings. If the house is still around and plot isnt demolished, hopefully around thanksgiving i will take as many cuttings as possible. Should be able get enough for everyone already who requested.

Matt: Amazing story! Your cuttings look great. It looks like its a hardy tree to have gone through so much & still be so healthy. So much great advice here!! Keep us updated!

Here is my unknown sheepshead cutting. Rooted very fast in peat in a plastic box with lid
