Saving money and space for pots and soil

Hi .
I am having some amounts of cuttings and would like to save money on pots and soil.
I know that some here grow by the hundredes so i would like to know how can i save money on planting all these babies when time comes and they root..

i thought about planting three cuttings together of different varieties . maybe start these  in 3 gallon nursery containers after cup stage.
i can get 3 gallong pots for 2$ each .....
also i will label each branch on the pot and irrigate using a system.
probably its possible but wanted to here suggestions cause it looks like "financing" is needed-thus planing ahead.

I know what you mean, Eli.  I've been collecting 3 and 5 gallon food-grade buckets from some restaurants around town.  They're pickle buckets.
I am on well water, so to save a few hundred gallons of water this year, and to prevent the added wear on the well pump, I'm in the process of setting up 3 rain barrels.
And for potting mix, some stores will discount the bags if they're torn.  Not sure what it's like in Israel, but just some ideas for you.
For us new growers who went crazy with cuttings, you don't realize how quickly these things add up!

And crazy we are :)

I use materials I can find around me, course sand fine gravel, compost from my chickens. Not to much on the chicken compost. A gallon tin can makes a good plant pot. I do add perlite to my mix. Anything that keeps the roots on the dry side. Good luck with your rooting project.

Hi big smile- i dont have any chickens but heard their poo is very good...
actually compost isnt very expensive. also can be made as tea and let the plant drink some each week.
sand wasnt good for me cause it goes through the drain holes of the pot.

dont know maybe with perlite better?

Elin,

In place of the 1 gallons, I'd try using some 2 liter plastic soda bottles as the "starter" pots.  Just cut off the tops, paint the bottoms with some plastic spray paint, poke a few holes in the bottom/sides, and it's an instant 1/2 gallon pot, and it's nice and deep for the roots.  Also, if you don't paint the bottoms and turn it upside down, it makes a nice and tall humidity dome. They're about the cheapest, most durable, containers I've used and with every container purchased, you get a free 2 liters of soda! ;)

For soil, you should look into both vermicomposting (done with worms) and Bokashi composting (done with effective microorganisms in an air-tight container).  Both can be done indoors, if desired, and with very little space.  It's a great way to turn "garbage" into some nutrient-rich soil!

Figaro i tried using plastic drinking bottles for growing figs but i dont like them cause when i  up pot (usually happens fasst) i damage the roots because of the indentations  of the plastic bottle.
also i need somthing that can be used with a irrigation ssytem so....
i like to transfer the rooted cutting from the cup stage directly to a big pot cause i preffer less handling ( i am lazy).
anyhow i am sending examples of pots one is 5 gal and secong is about 7 costing 2$ and 4.5$.

the smaller pot has the drain holes on the side and i heard they are not good cause the root will encircle more and make the plant root bound?

Big cost savings can be made by buying container mix components in bulk. I am not sure what is available in Israel. But I would look for sources of pine bark mulch, free compost, and sand. Would be nice to find a source of Coco Coir for a good price as well.

Eli...depending on just how much space you have, you might want to consider keeping only one of each variety( some members keep a 2nd. one for back up, but that just wont work for me--no space)...even with that I'm still crowded...what I do with all my duplicates is give them to neighbors, family members, and forum members...any that are left over after that, I take to the local schools, and the teachers use them as garden projects for the kids.

that is a good idea regarding handing out plants and i like i too.
actually i think its a very nice present to give somone a well rooted fig tree in a nice pot with some rocks on top.
people get fed up with chocolate and wine :)

Someone had a good idea to stop the soil from running out the holes in a pot. Put a coffie filter over the holes.

got a story with a picture.
i went to day to see for pots for my rooted cuttings and asked in one nursery if they have small pots for 25 cents or somthing-they told me they wanted .5 $.
then i went to another nearby nursery and got this for free... about 200 pots all sizes.
the guy old me-take as many as you want and didnt want any money.

so saving money s possible if somone wants :)
