Scale - Take care of it right away!

Hi everyone.  Just wanted to share these pics of my small Cucumber.  It was a rooted cutting taken from the mother tree at the end of last season after she was dormant.  Potted up and kept inside all winter.  It budded and leafed out very nicely and looked extremely healthy.  About 2 weeks ago I noticed a clear honey substance on the edge of the pot and on 1 leaf.  Though it was overspray from neem oil I had sprayed for gnats on a few other plants and ignored it.  Turned out to be scale and within a week this is what I had.  Should have sprayed as soon as I saw the honeydew but procrastinated.  Removed the scale and treated heavily with neem oil.  Scale came back a little within a few days and treated again.  The plant is suffering now but will probably make it.  Live and learn.

Good luck getting rid of them.  I had a much lighter case last year and it took several treatments.  Sounds like you are using the right approach now.

Gross. I harte scale Danny. I was picking them off w a q-tip in alcohol on my citrus for almost a month. They invade my greenhouse in autumn w/o fail.

The scale keeps coming back.  Honeydew keeps coming back and scale forming on leaves, stems and trunk.  This is the first time that neem has not worked for me.  I don't want to trash the plant so I'd like to use something a little stronger.  Any suggestions?

You should do more neem oil applications even if the scale is gone.

I think every two weeks after the first application with gradual tapering down.

Is the location well ventilated? Is the scale on the bark also?

Despite what I've read online, neem oil doesn't work on scale at all for me. Pyrethrins seem to have done the trick.

Eli - Thanks for the reply.  I'm usually thorough with neem applications.  Definitely not every two weeks but at the first sign of any trouble I spray away.
There is plenty of ventilation as the plant is sitting on a shelf indoors.  It's with a dozen or so other figs that are thriving.  Temps 70-72F.  Plenty of sun.
The scale appeared on the bark this time around.  Scale has not spread to the other plants.

I've sprayed neem for the 3rd time and removed all the scale that came back.  The plant is quarantined outside for now.

levar - Is there any specific brand that you've used successfully?
