Scored at the Depot

Ok, I have figs ripening on my Hardy Chicago, some figs ready to pick again today from the Konadria, 20 plus trees growing in pots on our deck, three out back that I repotted, some Celeste air layers....and what did I " find" today at HD hiding among their sale plants? Yep, three Celeste, and two Brown Turkey. And, yes,,,I rescued the Celeste, along with a large Eastern Box Turtle crossing the road, but that's a different forum :- ) Here are some snaps of the new plants. Cost per plant was $20.00. Special request photo added of rescued turtle. Photo No.4 - repotted baby fig trees resting in back shaded garden.

Nice find.  They look real healthy.  Just curious what they cost.

Mark, nice pick up. Celeste should do well for you in ground I would think.

Nice pick up but I really wanna see a pic of the box turtle too

My depot needs to learn from yours.

Score! And the turtle is cute too. What's his name? :D

My Home Depot here in Edison N.J. used to sell fig trees up until about five years ago(nobody seems to know why they stopped)...so now I get my "box store" figs trees at Lowes...this spring(March / April) I picked up 4 trees (2 Hardy Chicagos, and 2 Kadotas)...they didn't look like much back in March(all shriveled up and dry looking)...for about a month I wasn't sure if they were dead or alive...by July they were all flushed out and looking beautiful...I gave 1 HC, and 1 Kadota to a friend who was just starting out with figs, and sold one to a fellow who stopped over and said he just had to have a Kadota fig tree...I kept the other Hardy Chicago for myself and have been enjoying delicious fresh figs from it since the second week in August...by the way I purchased the four original trees for $9.89 each.

Thanks for posting a pick of the Box turtle Mark!! Looks like a very nice female, healthy full grown and nicely marked.

look at the turtle!so cute

Added a fourth pix today of the three up-potted baby figs in their resting place in the back garden, mostly shade, afternoon sun, shaded with leaves.

Quick update

And ONE more added to the " collection " today during our Sunday morning outing to the Depot. As noted in the initial posting here, we picked up a few Celeste that were hanging out on the back of the racks, but there were also three or four BT, that didnt look as good as the BT. On today's trip, we poked around and found an almost defoliated BT, that " most" average gardeners would bypass. As we picked up a few green Thuja to add to our privacy hedge, my wife says to the plantsman, hey, there's a BT fig tree over there that I know you guys will just throw out, can we have it? Salesman says, you buy those other plants, and you can have the fig for free. :-)

So, we purchased the three trees we wanted, and went away with a nice BT that is well branched, has nice green buds, and one healthy full leaf. I'll repot it today, give it some good TLC until frost! Attached is a collage of the buds, new leaf, and branching.

Great find!! On the figs and the turtle, I need a "I Stop to Rescue Turtles" bumper sticker.....

Nice figs..(since this is a fig forum :)) ...and Celeste is a tasty little thing.

I've stopped the car to let snakes have safe passage, but we don't have turtles roaming about. What do you do with them? Move them off the road and let them be on their way? Or, ack, make soup?

Down here we swerve or stop and move the turtles and frogs and try our best to run over the snakes.

Had to repot the newly acquired, and very root bound BT, as expected. The sole remaining leaf looks nice as do all the full of life buds. Now, it needs to rest in the shaded area of the garden for a few days.

Mark,
It looks like you planted that BT extra deep when you repotted. Are you hoping to get two new trees next year out of the two lower branches, or is that your way of encouraging more of a multi-trunk bushy form rather than a tree-like form?
Jim.
