Scotts black vs lsu black

I know this question has come up recently (Nkesh) but now that I see a picture of "lsu black" for sale by a reputable member that is a black fig with a white interior compared to scotts black which has a red interior, I wonder if there really is a lsu black.  I know Dan mentioned there was a late black but he didn't describe the interior color.  Any thoughts on this?  Thanks in advance.

Ed, I share your interest in this LSU Black.

Hello Ed,
And thank you for bringing this up because i've been wondering the same which is why........I have both LSU Black and LSU Late Black. I received my Late Black a few months ago and it is HUGE. I got several large LSU Black trees and they produced a lot of figs. But no, figs to compare it against my LSU Blacks.

There is a post out there and maybe this helps. If not, i will add pics from my trees this summer. Cheers,
http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=5124385,

Tim, Fatnasytexan, I apologize that I started this post instead of continuing yours but I have still not seen the interior of a lsu black or lsu late black, only in an ebay picture. However I have utmost trust in the source.

Ed, I was told by a long time grower that LSU Black and LSU Scott's Blk. both are the same fig. LSU Scott's Blk. has a dark purple exterior color and red interior. Same ext. and int. colors with the LSU late Blk., but ripen much later than the LSU Scott's Blk.

LSU Scott's Blk. cut in half.

nkesh,  I was also told by a long-time grower that LSU Black and Scott's Black are the same fig.

I can't speak for LSU late black however.

Ed, no problem, my friend!

Bill and Navid.  I believe what you guys are saying but what puzzles me is the interior white color of "lsu black" as opposed to the red interior of scotts black.  Still havent seen the interior of a lsu late black

Hi Ed. This is the information that was shared with me and is a quote:

"There is no LSU fig known as LSU Black………that was a made up name by a certain mail order  nursery."
So maybe this is why there is the discrepancy in fruit color, etc.

It was also brought to my attention that the following figs are three that do originate from the LSU test orchards:
- Scott's Black
- Late Black
- St. Gabriel Black

Bear in mind that this is simply some second hand info that I am passing along. I don't know much more about the LSU fig program other than what I've learned from fellow fig growers.

Thanks Bill.  What does the interior of late black look like?

Sorry Ed, I honestly haven't seen any of these varieties in person. I rec'd some Scott's Black cuttings in trade this winter. I'm rooting them now. The person I got them from is the individual who shared this info with me.

According to pictures from a trusted fig fiend Marius, LSU Black appears to be distinctly different from LSU Scott's Black. His photographs - they were on eBay - show a dark skinned fig with pulp that is different from the pulp of LSU Scott's Black, i.e., it is not reddish or purplish.

Given that 'evidence', I asked Marius about the source for his LSU Black:

I found LSU Black from Petals of the Past but I am not sure what it is http://petalsfromthepast.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=31_38&products_id=515 and my conversation with the owners of Petals have not helped much.

Thanks,

To which Marius responded that he purchased several LSU figs including LSU Black from a professor in Shreveport LA in October of 2008 or 2009. Marius noted that his trees still have the original labels.

There has been some good talk about the LSU Blacks including Tim's thread, http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/Do-you-have-the-LSU-BLACK-5178150 and http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/Is-Scotts-Black-LSU-Black-5088598. However, there were no photos of a cut fig until Marius' photo on eBay. Unfortunately, I did not save it.

I know of two people who have LSU Late Black. I trust those trees will ripen fruits this year and help to one-third of the LSU "Black" mystery.
