Sealing Cuttings

Has anybody else tried this? The other day I was trying to move a shoot that was about 1 1/4" in dia. that was crossed beside another trunk. My intention was to push it over enough to get a pot around it to try an air-layer, because it had to go either way.  Well guess what happened it broke off, so I cut it up  The pieces were large and i knew it needed to be sealed to retain moisture. I looked all over and could not find the block of wax to melt. I did however find a can of that Flex Seal stuff, so I said what the heck Ill try it. What I did was spray some in an old jar lid, not much just enough to get a little puddle.  Then took each cutting and pressed it into it to coat the top ends . Once it had dried it was sealed and  the adhesion was very good.  Now the cuttings are putting out leaves and look to have zero shrinkage. It might be a good pruning sealer also, cant see a cane borer going through that stuff. I think it just took the place of wax for me, besides a can would last a long long time because it really only take a small amount. Just a word of caution wear gloves that stuff is pure hell to get off your hands after it dries.

Hi Mike ...thanks for the info on the sealer...what is the brand name of the product that you used ?...I'll try to find some locally...I have been using old fashioned asphalt sealer, but I just ran out...I'm willing to try something new.

Its Rust-Oleum Leak seal flexible rubber coating.  You know its the knock off of that miracle stuff that you see on those infomercials. Flex seal that turns a screen door into a boat. Its seams to be good stuff, but i don't think I would fix a hole in my boat with it.

Ok Mike...Thanks, I'll give it a try.
