Search For 2 Old Figs

Listed in the Fig in Georgia, l903, by the Georgia Experiment Station, Experiment, Georgia are 2 figs of interest, but I can find no info that they still exist.

Golden Narbus-syns: Doree Narbus, Doree Norbus, & Doree Nobis.
Med. fruit, skin bright, waxy, golden yellow with clear amber pulp & white meat. Fruit quality good and heavy cropper.

Black Provence-syns: Black Marseilles & Black Marsaillaise.
Small fruit, spoon bill leaf, skin thin, but tough, violet black, pulp rosy red, and meat white. Good quality and sweet.

Perhaps they still exist with localized names in and around Georgia.

The White Ischia (Green Ischia) was rated as the best of all Georgia figs.

An interesting note is that they had Brunswick & Magnolia as separate varieties. Their Brunswick had an oak leaf.

I hope all you figsters have a great year.

Jack

Jack,

There is a little info for "Doree" at http://figs4fun.com/fvar-D-E%20frames1.html#DOREE

Herman's Marseilles VS may be Black Marseilles, but we have nothing to compare it to.

Never thought Green and White Ischia we identical. Definitely not the same at USDA/ UC Davis - see 2007 pix at http://figs4fun.com

Fignut has the Black Marseilles, but does not have cuttings available yet.

Does anyone know if the Celeste from EL is really a breba crop fig or is that a printing error in the catalog?

James,

Thanks for the info on the Black Marseilles. I'll check with Fignut next season.

Best Regards,

Jack
