Seattle Purple (unknown) First Main Crop fig!

It was not fully ripe, but I am heading out the door and see about 40 sparrows partying on my tree, after shaking the tree and shooing them away I see 3 almost ripe main figs, that were not inside my plastic bags...those are very high up... Picked a bit early, but still it was very good. The aftertaste and smell is very strong. the pulp is meaty. Has a very figgy taste.

I picked this first main fig to show you (main are as big as the brebas) before the darn sparrows got it first. Purple Seattle.JPG  Purple Seattle Unk 1.JPG  RdB, Adriatic, Purple.JPG

Enjoy!

YOU BET  I'll enjoy!  I cant wait until I taste my first.  I'm so happy mine are growing great..

Nice! Can't wait for mine next year. Is the slice with a red interior a Seattle Purple also?

Andy, the red pulp is a RdB.

Nice figs Grasa !
For a while thought the Seattle Purple to be a 'cousin' of Dauphine...

Francisco

Francisco, that is what someone pointed out! I know what it is not. It is not a Brown Turkey.

Since we have no Dauphine or Dolphin to compare the fruits with and I don't have the monies to have its DNA tested, we shall call it Seattle Purple until such time of name enlightment arrives. It is a good fig, and got better as the tree ages gracefully.

Looks good Grasa.  Is your main crop more or less productive than the breba?

I could be wrong, but I think this fig is somewhere in the realm of Neveralla/Archipel/Osbourn Prolific.  From what I have read, there is some confusion about the distinction between these varieties.  The links below are what lead me to my guess.  The fruit and leaves in the second link look exactly like my tree that came from your mother tree.

Hi Grasa,
No BT, but sorry, no Dauphine either. The skin of the fruit is all black for the dauphine, fruits show their ribs and fruit is round and flat .

Nice fig Grasa, can't wait till next year.
Tanks for the nice plants, they are doing great!

Looking good Grasa, whatever it is, it looks nice. Congrats.

Grasa, the inside of your unknown looks so delicious.

Francisco has amazing pictures of his Dauphine, (hopefully he posts them for others to also drool looking at them) mine is not a Dauphine... As I said, I have it for 24 years and it is a great tree, despite of its early childhood abuse suffered at hands of misinformed fig owners. (Fig tree abusers! that is!!)

Maybe one day we will know what it is, but from now, it is all I have. It would be good to know how this fig does in hotter areas. Does the pulp change color? Stay amber with purple ribs on the outside? Small eye?

I love how ribs get purple but the main body stays green...just a beauty, I'm so glad I am growing one of this thanks to you :)

Feel free to send some cuttings my way and I will let you how it does in hot climate.

With Grasa's permission here a few pictures of Dauphine main crop which sports those purple shades.
Sorry cannot show pulp but it was light brownish..
If I remember well the brebas were very similar in shape and colors.
Dauphine is a San Pedro fig.

Thank you Grasa.
Your Seattle Purple is a jewel !

Francisco, please enlighten me again, would S. Pedro need a wasp?  We certainly don't have wasps here in the Seattle area, and I have both Brebas and Main figs.

your Dauphine has a hue of yellow that mine does not.

San Pedros ripen their breba crop without the wasp but wont ripen the main crop without wasp pollination.

Whatever it is shes a beauty Grasa. Francisco that dauhone is also a beauty.

Hi lampo,

... Are you sure of your Dauphine ? She looks a bit too green for me...
Do you have pics of the leaves - although they seem almost all different on the big one that I know of .
But guess ... I only (will and do ) know the brebas of Dauphine here in Zone 7 ... Can't get the main crop here ...
Or can't get the brebas ...
In fact, I don't know . The tree for sure behaves like a unifera ( not ripening two crops ) for whatever the reason .
The figs ripened around 5th of September here this year ... That is late for brebas IMO. But the tree seems to have made a replacement crop this year for whatever the problem.
I'll know more in the future since I bought one for myself this year .

Sorry Grasa for heading your thread to Dauphine, but at least you know why I think that yours is not a Dauphine .

I just recently posted a picture of this fig :  http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/grasas-unk-seattle-purple-7065717?pid=1284185614#post1284185614

I am growing in Tampa Bay, FL - so we have plenty of heat.  My fig from Grasa's parent tree didn't have the purple ribs, it was overall amber color on the outside.  But mine is a year old tree, so this is not exactly indicative of what this fig will look like when it is mature.

I still think this is a Neveralla/Archipel/Osbourn Prolific.  Especially considering these varieties are common in the Pacific Northwest.

MAllen, your fruit is different because the tree is young.  I have a "not Neveralla" growing in a pot. (Slavi bought it from the store as Neveralla), its fruits look a lot like yours  that came from my large Seattle Purple unknown.

I have to inquire more about the Osbourn Prolific- maybe my not a Neveralla is it!

Grasa,

As Bob said, being a San Pedro Dauphine needs pollination to ripen its main crop, like Lampeira (black), DK, Bravinha, Castanhol, etc..
The figs shown are main crop from mid August 2012.

jds,

Here the leaves from these Dauphine trees

Hi Grasa, here are photos of my Osborne Prolific for you to compare. The fruit was not ripe enough to show inside. The tree is inground for  2 years.IMG_3257.JPG  IMG_3259.JPG  IMG_3260.JPG  IMG_3261.JPG

Gary thanks for posting the pictures of  the Osbourne.  the striped ribs reminds of mine also.

the shapes of the figs are all over the place, some are very round, pointing, water drop shapes etc.  I guess I need a cutting of yours and you need one of mine to 'compare side by side'.

Anyone out there in the PNW growing Osbourne?

Grasa, can you post some pictures of the dominant leaf pattern on your tree?
