Seaweed Extract for improving cold hardiness

Over on the Plumeria group's Facebook page, seaweed extract mixture is given in Nov. Many think it helps improve a plant's cold hardiness. I thought this would be an interesting experiment for those in colder regions to try out.

Their cocktail seems like it would be giving the plants a boost of fertilizer just before winter.  I've always thought that was frowned upon because it would keep plants from hardening off by promoting growth.  I wonder if timing is everything with this...i.e. in August is bad timing, but in November the plants are already commited to going dormant and just utilize the nutrients to further toughen up???  Anyone doing this?

Interesting post Sue.  Thank you.

Greg,
Mike states that this is an organic mix he uses in early Nov and that it doesn't promte growth or flowering this close to winter. It may just make the plant stronger internally to help it thru the dormancy period. I just thought this was an interesting concept that may be applied to figs as well. If not the complete mixture at least the extract.
