Where  I can buy seed fig tree ?

If its fig seeds your looking for try buying some dried figs from your local store and use the seeds inside them some members have had luck that way.

Growing figs from random seed is not really a good idea. Half of the seedlings will be male and of no real use, half of the other half will require pollination (smyrna) and the remaining 25% will be of the common female type that will set fruit without the fig wasp. That is only if the seeds come from a fig which was pollinated by a persistent male fig. Unfortunately, dried figs are usually the smyrna type and have been pollinated by a non-persistant male fig, so none of the seedlings will ever bare fruit without pollination from the fig wasp.

If you want to try to grow figs from seed I would recommend that you collect seeds from common female trees that have not been pollinated at all. It has been shown that some varieties can produce viable seeds spontaneously and because there was no male involved all of the seedlings will be common females. You will need to be lucky though because while it is possible, it is rare. The term for this is apomixis.

Brent, that is interesting.  Since the fig is not pollinated, is it the same as the parent fig?  Or, will that too be a totally different fig?

The few abstracts I have seen suggest that apomictic seedlings do vary even though they only have the mother's DNA. I read somewhere else that there is a chance for mutation during seed formation and then there is that whole epigenetic factor.

Ebay is your best bet.  When you get them, throw in a cup of water. What floats is hollow.  Scoop out and plant the rest.  But you are looking at very little chance of getting a common fig.  If I am not mistaken 95+% of it being Smyrna.

I'm from indonesia, rare to find who plant fig tree, so any idea.

Ramdan,

There are a few members on this fig forum that are from Indonesia.
Do a forum search using "Indonesia" as a keyword.

Or maybe they may contact/offer you with some help (privately?).

BTW; welcome to the forum.

Ramdan also you can start new thread

Thanks Brent. You motivated me to search out info on updating my terminology.  I had always used the term parthenogenesis for this.  From what I can see, "parthenogenesis" is a more general term, (and strangely enough, in some usages more specific as well).  General in that it is used in zoology and a wider set of organisms (versus apomixis being botanical), and specific in that it has (sometimes, historically) been used specifically for gametophytic processes, i.e. where the embryo arises from an unfertilized ovum, whereas apomixis can be from other cell types in addition to ova.  So I guess the terms overlap significantly (for many scenarios both terms apply, but each also has applicability in scenarios where the other does not... i.e. overlapping sets).  Interesting linguistic update... thanks for pointing out the usage in botany.

For Ramdan:  I'd suggest using the internet to find sources of cuttings rather than seeds.

Hi Ramdan ,

Welcome to the forum .
If you would like to buy for  figs seed , you can check to the following Ebay link :
http://www.ebay.com/itm/20-FRESH-SEEDS-OF-FIG-TREE-variety-BLACK-BROGIOTTO-from-Italy-home-of-fruit-/300838327877?pt=UK_HomeGarden_Garden_PlantsSeedsBulbs_JN&hash=item460b5c9645

But Mostly , figs from seed would need long time growing period and difficult to produce figs fruit , in some cases , you will get a Caducous (or Smyrna) figs which require pollination on the F1.

I have some figs , you may PM me if you would like to.

Thanks and Salam ,
