Seedlings

These are the leaves from 30 seedlings of Encanto Honey, from the same fig. I am going to grow them out to see if any are winners, but mostly to see how much they vary.  Most of the leaves and similar, but there is also quite a bit of variability.

This is a large pix so that you can really see the different leaves. HERE

It will take a few years to see how the fruit turns out, but if leaf variability is any judge, the fruits will also be quite different.

Next time I will do this with Black Madeira seeds.

Quite a bit of diversity in one batch of seeds, pretty neat

Interesting... I can check the leaf variability on my panache seedlings, I have a 100 strong about 1/2 inch now. I actually wanted to see if they would come back as striped green figs.

Jon, how do you name/label the seedlings? Is there any orderly approach?

I have many more than panache, actually, from VdB, Black Lebanese, HdA, and I think I may see some from your Unknown Pastiliere and 184-15 that I got at the Fiesta.
I have to develop some kind of structure to keep track of all of them.

none alike. what a beauty.

Good morning,
Do seeds from fig trees produce true? Is the fruit the same as from the mother plant?

That's really interesting Jon, strange to think you could get so many different figs in one pot so to speak. I suppose it really isn't so different than the difference in siblings.

Are the fig of the day posts over? I keep waiting and it's not coming.

Very interesting Jon . All from one fig , incredible.

Greenfig - these are just called EHS1 to EHS30. All my seedlings get some temp name that reflects their origin. The winners get a real name, later.

RichinNJ - No, any time you have sex involved (pretty much all seeds) , you do not get progeny that are true.

Apprently leaf shape is a very complex genetic event. If it were simple, you might expect to see two types of leaves, and a 3 to 1 ratio, a la Gregor Mendel's peas.

Thanks, Jon.
Are those leaves from this year seedlings or the last?
I read online a little and it seems that this year seedling leaf variability is quite normal. The next spring leaves should be more similar. The next year difference would be quite interesting.

The seedlings from this year all have nearly identical one lobed leaves - which seems to be the juvenile phase. This leaves are from plants that are two years old, and appear to have passed the juvenile phase and started differentiating.
