Selecting a 3rd fig

Well,

I'm in San Jose, CA (Z9) and I have two figs in the ground, Peter's Honey and VDB. I'm looking at adding a 3rd (maybe even 4th) in ground that I will keep low, like bushes. I would like the figs to taste unique as possible to each other, and ripen at different times if possible. Fill in the blank:

Peter's Honey
VDB
________
________

If you can tell me how they contrast from the above figs that would be good to know. I'm relatively inexperienced with figs.

Thanks
aguy

Strawberry Verte, Celeste, Figo Preto, Black Mission NL, GM-1, Narragansett, etc

I would say Black Mission, it's a very historical tree here in California. And the fruit is very good.

I thought I had seen VDB described as  a "mission type fig". Mine hasn't fruited yet so I can't compare taste. I've had Mission figs from peoples yards here, they are the best figs I've ever tasted. They were also dead ripe (were almost wrinkling/fermenting on the tree). Well, Mission will be easy to find that's for sure.

Mission and VdB are quite different in many way. However, there are Mission trees out there that are really VdBs, Have picked up a few at cutting exchanges labeled as Mission, and are clearly VdB when they grew up. Would have been bad if they had been BTs.

Ohjustaguy if it were me to make that choice i would go with
Black Madeira
VdB
Ronde de Bordeaux

Whats Peters Honey that sounds like someones woman.  ; )

Ha Ha Diesler,

I'll tell you the way some people talk and take care of figs on this forum it might as well be there "Honey". Amirite?

Here are few other cultivators to consider- Barnisotte, LSU Scott's Blk., Noire de Caromb and Noire de Bellone.

Good luck.

Navid.

Paradiso Gene, JH Adriatic, GM#5, Genovese Nero, Kathleen Blk, Col de Dame, Zingarella, Smith, White Greek, Batalagia Grn.

Many choices.

Yes there are many choices! Well, I know Black Mission is easy to get around here, and the first two replies suggested that, so I'll get that for sure. I actually was thinking of a 4th by putting 2 in 1 hole (Dave Wilson BYOC style).

So VdB, Black Mission, Peter's Honey, we'll see about that last one....see what I can find from these suggestions.
