Selling on eBay

I used to think trading airlayers was really great. But, I just sold my first Fig on eBay for $117. If it was sold by the many well known and reputable sellers we have, it would have sold for twice the price. But I am happy to get what I wanted for it. I have already started another AL.

Congratulations! Good luck on the AL as well.

What did you sell? Maybe I need one..!!

A Figoin, the mother tree was only 4" tall when I got it last year, but now at 6ft and figlets.

Congrats!!! Whats your id on Ebay?

Congratulations Figfanatic57!

I got outbid by a few dollars. Maybe I'll have better luck next time. :)

Smyfigs, My eBay ID is the same. Thank God I have not bought no figs for a few months now. I mostly have been trading airlayers.

I think airlayers may be the better option for people like me who somehow kill cuttings.. LOL

Yes, airlayers can be easier. But sometimes you wonder why some grow roots and some don't. I'm done with cuttings, mold and gnats. But, when Figholics.com comes around in Jan 17 I'll buy cuttings for trades.

Right now a really easy way to root cuttings is this. Take a fresh cutting wrap top half in parafilm and stick bottom half in a gallon pot with pro mix HP. Keep in shade and water as necessary. Very high success rate, to me I prefer this over air layering. This is only this time of the year though.

BrianM, Do you mean its only works for the Summer and you grow the Cuttings outside?

That's similar to what I'm doing, sans the parafilm.  I pop the cuttings in a recycled trade size gallon nursery pot with good quality compost, set the pot in an open cold frame in the shade of the fruit trees (the most sun the cuttings get is dappled shade in this +100°F weather), mulching up around the outside of the pot a couple of inches, and water well. I test the compost in the pot periodically and only water if it's dry below the top 1/2 inch.  The larger plants were from bare stick cuttings I stuck in the pots the evening of April 30th/May 1st and the pot with the little leaves are bare stick cuttings I received on June 17th. Out of 10 cuttings, only one hasn't shown any green (but I haven't given up hope on it). So we're looking at a 90% success rate as it stands right now. Note: the other pots contain cuttings from other plant species that I've only just potted up. Easy Peasy!

For me yes summer and late spring. Outdoors under shade cloth works best. Parafilm eliminates humidity domes and cups and also no transfer.

Got it! Yes, so long as you dont regress, you'll be okay :-)

Do you ship short airlayers internationally? :)

Helike13, Customs would be illegal and how long it would take. Seems like you should be able to get airlayers/Cuttings in Asia. There are too many great nurseries there in Asia.

Brianm, what kind of parafilm do you use? A quick search brought up grafting and scientific and there are many different widths.

In Asia it is not that strict :)
I regularly send from my orchard from Hungary to Asia around 3000 short airlayers in shoe boxes on a yearly basis... in Asia indeed there are great nurseries but with great fakeries ;)

Here you even can get common-type Calimyrna...

(The Indonesian folks got a random common-type yellowish variety and sticked tge name 'Calimyrna' on it...)

I use the one inch and I got it on eBay. Here is the item number. 251358555759

I use 1 inch also it's easier to handle , keep in cool place if it gets hot it will stick to the paper and will be hard to separate

brinam and RegencyLass:  Wow fellow fig lovers, this is exciting information.  I was overwhelmed this last fall/winter with the process of rooting cuttings indoors.  This outdoor simple method sounds fab.  I have a question though, are these cuttings from the previous fall from dormant trees or fresh cuttings from spring/summer and are they new or old wood?  Thanks so much for the help.  Happy figging.

I am currently using this year's wood as it is mostly lignified.
