I used to think trading airlayers was really great. But, I just sold my first Fig on eBay for $117. If it was sold by the many well known and reputable sellers we have, it would have sold for twice the price. But I am happy to get what I wanted for it. I have already started another AL.
Congratulations! Good luck on the AL as well.
What did you sell? Maybe I need one..!!
A Figoin, the mother tree was only 4" tall when I got it last year, but now at 6ft and figlets.
Congrats!!! Whats your id on Ebay?
Congratulations Figfanatic57! I got outbid by a few dollars. Maybe I'll have better luck next time. :)
Smyfigs, My eBay ID is the same. Thank God I have not bought no figs for a few months now. I mostly have been trading airlayers.
I think airlayers may be the better option for people like me who somehow kill cuttings.. LOL
Yes, airlayers can be easier. But sometimes you wonder why some grow roots and some don't. I'm done with cuttings, mold and gnats. But, when Figholics.com comes around in Jan 17 I'll buy cuttings for trades.
Right now a really easy way to root cuttings is this. Take a fresh cutting wrap top half in parafilm and stick bottom half in a gallon pot with pro mix HP. Keep in shade and water as necessary. Very high success rate, to me I prefer this over air layering. This is only this time of the year though.
BrianM, Do you mean its only works for the Summer and you grow the Cuttings outside?
Sounds Great!!! Will have to copy it down and give it a try. Thanks!!!
Do you ship short airlayers internationally? :)
Helike13, Customs would be illegal and how long it would take. Seems like you should be able to get airlayers/Cuttings in Asia. There are too many great nurseries there in Asia.
Brianm, what kind of parafilm do you use? A quick search brought up grafting and scientific and there are many different widths.
I use 1 inch also it's easier to handle , keep in cool place if it gets hot it will stick to the paper and will be hard to separate
brinam and RegencyLass: Wow fellow fig lovers, this is exciting information. I was overwhelmed this last fall/winter with the process of rooting cuttings indoors. This outdoor simple method sounds fab. I have a question though, are these cuttings from the previous fall from dormant trees or fresh cuttings from spring/summer and are they new or old wood? Thanks so much for the help. Happy figging.
I am currently using this year's wood as it is mostly lignified.
