separating fig

I have a fig (Petite Negri) in a large pot.  I noticed a little while back that a new shoot sprouted up near the edge of the pot.  Is there any problem with me taking that out now and potting it?  I'd like to give it to someone this weekend.  If that's a bad idea it can wait. Thanks

tony, messing with fig roots is best done  during dormancy.

i tried, but failed doing what you are talking about.

maybe someone else  knows a way to do this, but it would be safer to wait.

Is it possible those are seedlings?

If they are suckers, there are a couple of options, but neither one will be ready by the weekend. First, you can remove it. Dig down as far as you can and clip it from the mother plant. Try to take as many roots along with it. Once out, pot it up, clip the leaves in half and follow Bass' instructions for rooting summer cuttings. I've been leaving the tent on for about the weeks... at least until you see new to growth and then some.

Secondly, create a make shift pot around the sucker. I use the straight part of a soda bottle. Cut two slits at the top and bottom on each side of the bottle. Pass bamboo skewers through the slits so the top of the skewers is even with the top of the bottle. Then, wrap the bottle with foil. Slip the sucker through the bottle and push the skewers into the growing mix. Fill the bottle with the same growing mix and water when you normally water the parent tree. Let it ride until just before it breaks dormancy, then remove and pot up.

Hi Ajv73,
In a bigger pot, I could have been attempted - with no warranty on the outcome.
For me that sucker is too small. So let it grow this year and airlayer it in April next year .
My Pastiliere has a root-sucker that is still succulent and is 30 centimeters of height since last week - so I'll ,as well, wait until next April
to air-layer it.
I don't want to mess up the roots of the mother tree, and possibly loose both the mother tree and the root-sucker .
Keeping the mother-tree healthy is my priority - Getting a second tree out of her comes after .
Today, another fig fell off my Pastiliere. So that tree has 3 remaining figs ... Patience Patience, and be positive ... Pastiliere will probably be a productive strain in the future ...

@James : seedlings wouldn't be that thick at this height.

I think I'll take the advice and just wait. Thanks
