September cuttings update

Here are some of the cuttings I started last month.  I didn't put them in the cups until they developed several roots at least 3 cm in length.

Oh, and any white you might notice on the ends is not mold, but paraffin that I had dipped that particular cutting end in the day they arrived in the post.

Wow, great job!  Looks like you will have an exciting winter.  Good luck with them all.

Looks great!  You might be eating fruit off of those next summer :)

Figs are so easy to pass around and share and get fruit so fast. Love me some figs. nice work

Well done! :)

Nice job. Did you use a baggie, coir, moss, or ?

Nice job.

Thanks :) I used damp spagnum in see-through flat "under the bed" sterilite bins, labeling each variety so they didn't get mixed up.

Wow that is awesome! I think I started mine around the same time as you & my luck/skills were not even close to as good obviously! I have only one Cddn that rooted & leafed out/looks healthy.. All the rest either molded, leafed out but still no roots or have roots but no leaves.. So frustrated! Glad it's working out so well for you though!
Ohh plus the worst is these STINKING FUNGAS GNATS!! Have you had any probs with them at all? They are driving me nuts!

No gnats at all.  As soon as they started to get roots (about 3cm or so long) I popped them in a cup of Perlite/Vermiculite  (60/40 ratio, respectively), watered them well, let drain, and placed the cups on cake racks in a bigger ClearView Sterilite container with a lid on it, opening the lid anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour each day to allow fresh air in (thus avoiding the mold issues) while still keeping them from drying out. The cake racks in the bottom of the Sterilite bins are to make sure the bottoms of the cups are allowed to fully drain and are never in standing water.

I only get gnats if I use a potting mix (and Organic Miracle-Gro is the absolute worse for harboring fungus gnats), which is why I only use only Perlite/Vermiculite for my cuttings. Roots with no leaves and leaves with no roots is not uncommon as some cuttings just take a bit longer than others to get fully coordinated, so don't give up on them. :)  Best of luck!

RegencyLass: looks great!!!
Greenfin: is it possible to get figs from a cutting that soon? I read that it takes a few years to get figs from cuttings...true?

Regency lass ... did you soak them in water for a week then potted them in perlite/vermiculite while leaving them in container ( like a greenhouse effect?) Do you use additional lighting... they look great I hope at least half my cuttings survive this winter. Thanx

When the cuttings arrived in the post, I opened the pkg, dipped each tip in melted wax and buried the cuttings directly in damp sphagnum in plastic bins under the bed and just left them there, checking once a week for envelopment of roots.  Once roots developed, I potted them up in the Perlite/Vermiculite mix in clear disposable cups, each with 4 large drain holes, watered until it ran out the holes then let drain before putting them on racks in lidded Sterilite ClearView bins in a room with a large north-facing picture window, in indirect light, taking the lid off the bins about an hour a day to ward off mold. That's it. No soaking, no extra lighting, no pampering.

I still don't understand what FMV really is or how it affects fig trees...is it something like GMO?

It's Fig Mosaic Virus.  Tomatoes, peppers and tobaccos can get a similar virus. IMHO, it doesn't so much as damage the fruit (unless what you are harvesting is the leaf, as in tobacco), but rather just not pretty to look at.

Oh, I see.  Now I can look it up and read about it.  I googled it just to look at images...not pretty.  That's for sure.  I typically spray my plants with worm tea from my worm farm and it really takes care of a ton of things but not sure it will help this virus issue.  I'll have to really read about it.  Thanks for that tip.
