Sequoia

This is part of Jons Sierra/Sequoia deal he had a few years ago. They were root bound in deep pots and were approx. 3' or 4' tall each.

The funny thing is they went on a road trip before they arrived at my door. They went from San Diego to San Jose, then to Chicago and back to San Jose, and back to Chicago and then to my house. Total of two weeks on the road but still arrived well and healthy.

Been chop, chop and chopping away at this tree but this year I left it alone and let it grow. I think it was time for it to produce and it did.

Nice looking large green figs on it at the moment and look like they're just about ready to start the next stage of ripening.

I don't know who it was that told me that this cultivar is not so so. But I want to find out my self. As we all know, the climate plays a big and important role.

Please enjoy the pictures,

Look great Rafed.

Rafed it is a good looking plant and from the story obviously a hardy specimen.  To me taste has to come after the hardy if you can't grow it you can't taste it.  My worst fig was pretty good.

Goss,

I have to agree with your last sentence.
And every time someone asks, I tell them I never had a fig I didn't like.

Thanks for looking.

Are you getting the heat wave we're getting?  I hope that pushes a bunch of your figs to ripen.

Bob,

Been in the mid 80's the last few days. Hopefully it will stay this way for a while,
Have a lot of first timers I want to try.

Rafed, another fine looking specimen. Thanks for sharing.

I delivered those trees to Jon (actually, my wife did). So far, I am not impressed with the fruit taste. I may pull mine out.

I am not impressed with its taste too.

Harvey, I think I recall that you met with the breeder of this variety (and Sierra).  Was his purpose a fig with size, holding up to shipping, color, taste or some other factor?

Hmm, that's really interesting to me, HarveyC.  If you enjoyed UCD 278-128 (Golden Riverside) but not this, then...maybe it needs another couple of years?

Both Sequoia and Sierra were developed to be replacements of Calimyrna but without need of caprification.  They just don't have much flavor, in my opinion.  The breeding objectives include closed eye and tough enough skin for shipping, no cracking.  In my opinion, they've lost sight of the need for some good flavor.  Maybe it would taste okay dried.

I though Condit did that with Conadria years ago - not sure how it is fresh or how it ships, but is a great dried fig replacement for Calimyrna.
IMHO, figs will never be a product that ships well as a truly ripe fruit unless they breed the 'figness' out of them
