In the middle of a small retail greenhouse at work , I planted a JH Adriatic in a large pot as a point of interest for customers wanting to grow figs. I shaped it mainly to get it above the general bench height in the gh , so it can be surrounded by plants for sale on the benches without being in the way My initial idea was to have 2 arms follow the bracing on the post that it is placed against , but now I'm undecided. Any recommendations for shaping would be appreciated. Martin , you are always good at this. Even though it is not a dark fig , what would you do ? And don't tell me one cut at the soil surface would do the trick. Thanks, Kerry

Maybe you could train the branches to go above the steel frame and then branch out like a small canopy tree? It sure looks beautiful as it is now!

Kerry for this plant to keep nice for clientele keep laterals trimmed down to desired length before they start bending to far upwards toward roof and save desirable shoot or shoots that appear for next season it is a process that keeps repeating itself. If lateral eventually gets to extended for your expectations just cut it back and save desirable shoot that will appear near cut or node further back if at node further back is was what is best for looks you cut wood flush to it once it grows some.

Thanks Martin. I can picture now letting it develop some width instead of just going for a more flat espaliered shape. This is its second season in the greenhouse , it was planted as a 1 year old whip last year.

Kerry, Thanks for posting the pictures. The final shape is dependent on the space and how much shade you can allow below the tree. The standard tree form may be an impressive sight once leafed out. I've found that the Japanese pruning method works quite well to establish a desired dense canopy. By establishing the main scaffold (the desired shape), the secondary branches can be pruned back yearly to within 1 nodes of the scaffold branches. The fruiting branches that develop will grow very quickly from the 1 year old stubs. Good Luck.

Here are a few photos of the greenhouse JH Adriatic figs that didn't get eaten right away, because I hid them for a few minutes in order to take pictures. Taste was beyond exceptional and they could have been even more ripe. Martin would jump for joy with a taste of these.

Hi Kerry, you JH Adriatic figs are so gorgeous. I bought one-gallon JH Adriatic from KK in the spring of 2013 and It was planted it in the ground since spring too. It does not have any fig yet. I wonder if your JH Adriatic is different from KK's JH Adriatic. The leaf shape on my tree is different from yours. Where did you get your JH Adriatic? Can you please take a few photos of the leaves? Thank you Kerry. Best, Tam

Can somebody direct me to the story of JH Adriatic? I'd like to know the entire thing from beginning, who is JH and how did he come to name it Adriatic etc... I am growing few and looks like it's a nice variety. Glad I have them. Would like to thank the guy in person.

The origin of JH Adriatic from the man who owns the mother tree. To read the entire thread, click on the link in the upper right corner of the page linked below. http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/show_single_post?pid=1279498685&postcount=35

I have plain old Adriatic. This fig came from a non-active member. She is too busy these days. It's a monster! It sat year one. It's feeling it's muscles year two, and It will rock next year. I hope to put photos of the figs here soon. Suzi

Had my first fig of the season yesterday in NH ! The greenhouse JH Adriatic kept 2 breba , the first was ready . It was good , but nothing like the main crop. Although it was nice to try , I don't think I'd bother leaving them on next time. So far the tree has set about 40 main crop and continues to set more and is ready for a second pinch to keep it compact above the benches.

First of the main crop is now in on this greenhouse JH Adriatic. These were 75 to 95 grams each. Flavor was exceptional again like last year. Tree has set about 80 to 100 figs so far. Just love this fig !
