Should I be concerned?

Hi guys, I am interested in some expert opinion on whether or not I should be concerned about a fig I have, my gut thought is probably not, but as a new fig owner I am worried about my new fig-children!

I bought 3 plants from a nursery almost exactly a month ago today, and I repotted them all into a larger pot and new potting mix. They have been in the new mix about 22 days.

Since then one fig (Black Genoa) has put out about 3 new leaves, one (Brown Turkey) has tried to put out a couple of figs (which I pinched) and has broken one bud, but  the final fig (White Adriatic) has done nothing… it only has two buds spikes on the plant, and about 4-5 mature leaves, which are not in pristine condition. Not only is it not doing anything, but the two buds seem to be turning brown, and I am worried they are degrading/dying.

So my question is, will these buds eventually pop, or is this tree dying a slow death? Also, if both of these buds die for some reason, is it all over for the plant or will it develop new buds on older parts of the stem?

I have attached photos for your consideration!

Cheers!

1. Just be patient.
2. Your plant appears healthy and will eventually have new growth
3. IF the tip dies, it will create a new bud from another node.

Edit: add some dolmolite lime. Figs love it. AGAIN be patient!

Where did you find Black Genoa? I hear you can only get that in Australia? I may be wrong? Anyway good luck

Jennifer

Well, since you're on the wrong side of the globe (the down under thing) I assume you are heading to Fall, in which case the plants would be going dormant, no?

Other than that, I would not be concerned. As long as the wood is healthy, they should be fine. I don't think I would be pinching off new growth, if the plant wants to make new growth. Different plants and different varieties respond at different time.

Nate,

At the moment I'm going to say be patient. Seeing you are in Australia, I can't even guess what season it is, but that plant looks like it is just hanging out somewhat dormant at the moment. The big leaves look fairly good, so I'm sure they are gathering some energy for the roots, which at some point in time will decide to push that energy back up for new growth. It could be that the root system on this one plant was not as healthy as the other two, and at the moment this plant is growing roots primarily..or not..maybe it's just taking a time out, they do that.

In short, IMO it doesn't look like it's knocking on deaths door.

Haha, let's all answer at once!

Thanks all, I kind of thought that might be the case!

I am in Aus, so the Black Genoa is one of the common varieties we have here, that plant much more vigorous than the other two so far! We are right now in the dying days of summer, and where I am in the ACT, we could get our first frost any time from March, but usually in April, with April 25th generally considered the herald of daily frosts. As of today we still have quite warm temperatures with our maxes generally above 26oC (76F) and minimums in the mid teens (59F) so it would be strange for it to be going dormant just yet, I would think.

Feb = 2.  2+6=8.  8=Aug.  So S Hemisphere Feb is like August in N Hemisphere.  So for us up over types think of today being Aug 24 when you give advice.  Of course we don't know all the details of your current conditions - temp, rain, etc.

I can't see the photos because work blocks them but I'd guess too little water, or roots sitting in water or insects or toxins (too much fertilizer, spray from a neighbor, etc)
