Sicilian Black

Whew. I think I'm actually done buying figs for the year! Except maybe for Panache.... and there's still a coupla Kathleen Blacks on ebay.... ;-D

But anyway -- I just got a Sicilian Black, Robin strain. I looked it up here on the site and at GW, but there's not a whole lot about it. It's supposed to be good tasting, may have a tendency to sour in rainy weather, and may be a slow grower. A few years ago, there was some confusion between Sicilian Black, Scott's Black, and Sal's Corleone.

Has anyone got updated info on this variety?

I have Gino's black becnel italian black thats about as close as i am going to get. Gino's black may be close. You know how figs have multiple names. Richie from louisiana

Thanks for the input, Richard. I wish they all came with little DNA barcodes! ;-D

I got a "Sicilian Black Italian" from Jon several years ago and it is currently still in a pot.  I'm not sure it is the best fig for the climate down here in south Louisiana, because it always tastes a little bland and not as sweet as others.  That being said, I've never planted it in the ground, and so I'm sure the fig is not reaching it's full potential in a 3 gallon pot.  Don't get me wrong it is not bad at all, I just prefer other varieties I have to it.  It seems very similar in appearance of the fig to Papa John, but I like the papa john's flavor and sweetness more. That's all I got for you bud.  Hopefully you will enjoy yours!

Thanks, Cal.

I've never even heard of Papa John. Now I've got yet another fig to look up!
