Sicilian Miniature

I just ran across the following fig advertized by a nursery in Michigan, Sicilian Miniature. Here is there description and pic:

Picture

A bonsai fig variety that produces an abundant crop of excellent quality figs. This is one of the most prolific figs to grow in cold areas of the north. The fall fruits are born on the new canes that grow during summer, a plant with 4 new stem growths can produce up to 150 purplish brown figs. Self pollinating. Does not require special treatment. Zone 6-11.

If they are growing this fig unprotected in Michigan, it must be very cold hardy. Does anyone know anything about this fig?

I don't know, but if 4 stems can grow 150 figs, that seems like quite a lot. Couldn't help but try. I would be willing to try it too for the dwarf size.

I think that's the legendary big rock candy mountain fig.

One evening as the sun went down
And the jungle fires were burning,
Down the track came a hobo hiking,
And he said, "Boys, I'm not turning
I'm headed for a land that's far away
Besides the crystal fountains
So come with me, we'll go and see
The Big Rock Candy Mountains

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains,
There's a land that's fair and bright,
Where the handouts grow on bushes
And you sleep out every night.
Where the boxcars all are empty
And the sun shines every day
And the birds and the bees
And the cigarette trees
The lemonade springs
Where the bluebird sings
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains.

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
All the cops have wooden legs
And the bulldogs all have rubber teeth
And the hens lay soft-boiled eggs
The farmers' trees are full of fruit
And the barns are full of hay
Oh I'm bound to go
Where there ain't no snow
Where the rain don't fall
The winds don't blow
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains.

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
You never change your socks
And the little streams of alcohol
Come trickling down the rocks
The brakemen have to tip their hats
And the railway bulls are blind
There's a lake of stew
And of whiskey too
You can paddle all around it
In a big canoe
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains,
The jails are made of tin.
And you can walk right out again,
As soon as you are in.
There ain't no short-handled shovels,
No axes, saws nor picks,
I'm bound to stay
Where you sleep all day,
Where they hung the jerk
That invented work
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains.
....
I'll see you all this coming fall
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

Gene,

FYI,
The picture you see is used all over the internet buy other sellers.
That alone is a "Red Flag".

Here's one example,

This time it is a BT.

Only this time or the other seller spun the picture around. What would they do without photo shop?

Here's a bonsai fig I saw on Craigslist. Hard to imagine 5 figs on it, let alone 150.00l0l_1McXmoSlIJy_600x450.jpg

That one is too funny, 4 different pictures, none looking the same, selling rare black jack seeds but the last picture is a box of black mission figs from california.

I think one tell is when they claim "dwarf" or "semi-dwarf". Is there such thing in the world of figs? I know there are trees that are more or less vigorous, but I don't think enough to qualify as dwarf.

Beware!

I think my Ischia White can qualify as a dwarf. It is tiny and has about 15 figs (but sorry not 150).

I love it! Long time no hear Big Rock Candy Mountain. I believe Margaret Thather wrote the lyrics. No wait, it was the anthem of the New Deal....

150 out of a bonsai? maybe it takes nutrients from the air like dragonfruit?

I agree.  Ok, so lets say it actually produces 150 figs, are they the size of grapes or apple seeds?

My guess folks is that they meant it is the kind of fig that people make into bonsai. I don't think they were trying to say that a bonsai sized tree makes 150 fruits on 4 trunks. Or at least I will give them the benefit of the doubt.

My question was about the variety it is supposed to be "Sicilian minature," has anyone heard of this?

Hi,
Never heard of that strain.
As per the description, I would call it Brownturkey - cold hardy, brown figs, productive and the pic.
My BT is one meter large and two meters high and has currently some thirty brebas. The tree should make some thirty figs more for the maincrop ...
So even my BT is only half as productive as the strain described - did I mention my BT is in ground ?
Now, depending on the price, it could be worth the try, and I would do for sure .

I just saw a "Noire de Caromb" - if memory serves me well - one trunk tree at 1,5 meter of height and one meter width for the canopy for 30€ ... presenting 6 brebas figlets...
No wonder of what I've been thinking of ...

Forget it, I'm not buying anything off of internet!

Gene,

I never heard of this one.
Again, anyone who posts a pictures taken from the internet should be taken with a grain of salt.

If you are looking for a small fig tree then Bianchetta is what you want.
Everything about this fig is small. The leaves are small and dark green and the fruit is about the size of a golf ball or smaller and golden/yellow.

I have one but chopped away at it.

I think Jon was selling some cuttings not long ago.
Might want to ask him.

Good luck

BTW,
I have several that are small but still on trial basis. I want to make sure they are indeed small. I will need another season to make sure they are not a fluke.
And small meaning about the size of a cherry.
