Sicilian Red breba

This is one of my favorites figs. A good all around fig. Very productive and the taste is great. Nice and figgy and just sweet enough. This is probably the same fig that Leon posted the other day as Aldo's.
I can't wait for the main crop of this one, because it was one of my favorites last year.

That looks great Art!

Nice photo Art. Looks like my Aldo's. The main crop is perhaps more flavorful than the brebas.

Very nice fig,Art!

Thanks Tony, Leon, & Marius

Is this a Mt Etna type?  I have one named red sicilian but I have not tasted yet. That is a good looking fig.

Ryan, I'm pretty sure it's not a Mt Etna type. This one is like Sal's Corleone. Now Sal's El is a Mt Etna

Art.....  that is one nice looking fig, thanks for sharing photos.  Now I'm bummed out...!   A generous member gave me a few Sicilian Red cuttings last year but, they fell to fell victim to those damn gnats.  Must add to my want list..

Nice pics, Art.  And looks like a nice fig too!  Sicilian Red does very well here in central NY state... productive and great taste.  I haven't had any breba from mine, but the main crop is very good.  Like you, I count this variety as one of my favorites as well.

But mine is not like Sal's Corleone / Aldo's.  Leaves and fruit are both differentiating factors.  I trace the lineage of my tree back to Marius... is yours also?

Nice looking figs, Art.

What is the origin of this one?  I know there are several similar varieties floating around out there.

Mike, I trace my Sicilian Red back to Marius too. I had a few figs off of mine last year and it is definitely a keeper. However, mine really does seem a lot like the Sal's Corleone family as discussed in this thread:

http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/a-cousin-of-hardy-chicago-6489749?pid=1279225205#post1279225205

As described in the thread this fig was originally supposed to be Hardy Chicago but didn't look like it.   I also had an email conversation with Herman2 about what my non-HC fig might be.  Without any prompting about what it might be he said "That fig is Sicilian red, similar to Sal Corleone but not from the same tree as Sal Corleone which have a special history.  Common fig in Sicily."  That was when I combed through old emails and discovered that SR was sent in the same shipment.  I received both Hardy Chicago and Sicilian Red from a forum member  (who got SR from Marius) and the labels were apparently switched.  To make a long story short what I though was HC was actually SR.

Anyway, Mike does your SR look like mine?  Keep in mind that the fig I pictured was the very first main crop fig and Marius said that with maturity the pulp becomes more pink/red.  On the other hand, comparing my photos to Art's above the pattern of the pulp within the fig is different too... hmm.

Steve, I've got some pics somewhere at home of my Sicilian Red figs from last year.  When I get a chance, I'll post them here.  I think the fruit resembles Sal's Corleone, certainly in size, but to me the leaves look quite different.  But when I look at your Sicilian Red pictures in that thread, your tree does look very very close to Sal's Corleone.  So now I'm wondering if my Sicilian Red was mislabeled.  (Mine almost seemed to resemble Abruzzi, not to be confused with Abruzzes which is I think a synonym for Kadota/Dotato).  My Sicilian Red came to me also from another forum member who got it from Marius.  Like I said, I'll post pics when I get a chance.

Is it the same one NorthestNewbie has?

Here are a few leaves from my tree.

Mike, PM sent.

Art, those leaves look pretty much exactly like those of my SR.

OK, I found pictures of a main crop fig from last year, (it's a very small fig), and here are a couple of leaf pictures that I took today.  As you can see, mine looks different.  It would seem that either there are multiple varieties that go by the name "Sicilian Red", or else mine is mislabeled.  (Maybe both).  Anyone else have a "Sicilian Red" that looks like this one?

Some name confusion here.  I'm interested because I rooted this spring a 'Red Sicilian(MN)' from Encanto - original source was supposed to be Marius(MN).    Did some research on the names used here on the forum.  Marius has always used the name 'Red Sicilian' for his  ( http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/Red-Sicilian-fig-5532817 )
IMHO, I think you should probably rename yours, Mike, if you got it from him.  Easy to get these backwards and twisted and more confused as we go forward.

Ed, I've seen him label them with the words in both orders (SR or RS).  But I'll worry about that only after I straighten out whether it is the same fig or not... it might have been mislabeled somewhere along the line (mixed up with another variety entirely), and that is what I'm trying to sort out.  After that, if appropriate, I'll worry about whether Red or Sicilian should come first.  (It really has been both ways... check out the varieties pages too).

Mike

p.s.  I got this from another member who got it from Marius... not directly from him.
