side limbs needed

  • Mia

Hello,
My fig cutting's main trunk is approximately 5 feet now but without side limbs. Now that the young cutting is in hibernation should I cut the main shoot where I would like the limbs or will the cutting automatically grow its own limbs? This past mid-summer I removed the top eye bud but that did not start a side limb.
My last fig tree was perfect; the lowest limbs were approx 4-5 feet from the ground, height to approx 12-15 feet and very broad in diameter. The size made fruit picking easy.
Many Thanks for your help.

Yes, prune it back to where you want the branches to grow. Some varieties will continue to grow a single trunk, so you may have to continue to pinch it off to force branching.

I prune mine to 16" or so, as I want them to be shorter, more bush-like.

Thank you for the response.
Should I cut now during dormant season or in spring? Also, do I make the cut at a 90 degree and oil over it or just let it bleed?
Thanks again for the great web site.

Prune when dormant, which is now, as every warm week encourages breaking dormancy. Some of mine are already there, leafing out. Cut shape/angle isn't that important. Let it bleed - it won't do it for long.
