Similar Looking or Similar Tasting Figs...

It appears that I lost my small Black Greek, is there a similar variety. For example: I have a Sal's El and Chicago Hardy and I read here on the forum that they are similar. Another variety Panache and Strawberry Verte, to me they taste similar. I need input, I want to limit the amount of trees.

You hit it, Armando! The more I taste the figs, the more I am inclined to say that there are only a few different kinds of figs that are different in California:
Green with red center
Green with yellow center
Dark with with red center
Dark with light center
Brown with red center
Brown with light center
All other ones are so close by the taste that they can be approximated to those 6 regardless what the name is. So you need at most 10 trees to cover all the bases :)

Well I tasted a small Black Greek Fig, the tree was about 8 inches tall and it had a berry taste, So I was thinking because I have VDB that is also has a berry like flavor, that maybe I should not pursue trying to replace it.

Did they taste the same?
Since you were the one with both…
I do not have a Black Greek, sorry, and cannot help you with this. From my limited experience, the VdB is one of the best.

Not sure, Had one VDB in August of last year, and many months later in early November had one small fig of Black Greek.

Hi Armando,
Well, what is your goal with your collection ?
Collecting and raising trees ? then replace the black Greek .
Having lots of figs to eat ? then as long as other strains are providing you the quantity, you're done ...

Having different strains, could help you have a longer season with ripe figs, which regardless of the color,taste... would IMO be a good thing .
But ok, available space is a greater criteria as trees need space to thrive ...

So it is up to you (and every one) to find the balance ... ( Buy some land ? Aaron is in Cali I think ? ... Ask Aaron for a stripe of land in his project , but don't tell that I've given you the idea , I would deny )

JDFRance: Good Question, My Goal is to have the Best tasting Figs and have Plenty of them.

Here are some of my Goals:
1. Try to keep the collection under a 100 varieties (Don't Know if this will happen...LOL)
2. Solve my Rooting problems (added dirt to my potting mix and it helped out alot) and create a gnat free environment
3. Find a small house with plenty of land and water.
4. Visit and trade potted trees with California collectors, (trade cuttings with others out of our state), my trees are growing to slow...LOL
5. Networking with local tree nurseries, creating local customers, (may need to have a small fig event)
 Will post more goals later

Aaron is trying to create something for his community...????
I am trying to make a transition from a businessman to a small business Farmer.
