Hey forum friends! I'm starting to get some of the Slidell ukn cuttings to grow so I figured it was a good idea to start a new thread on our progress. So far all of the cuttings are pretty happy to root and the ones that broke bud produce a consistant single lobe leaf! Here are the first photos. Please feel free to post your results ! Thanks!

What did the tree look like when you took the cuttings?

Richard. The tree was dormant when I took the cuttings so no help there. We'll have to wait for this summer and our growing results to get a positive ID.

Shailesh. Thanks, I hope they do as well for everyone else. If half of the cuttings i sent out do well ,the Slidell unk will live in every corner of the States!

My cutting just got some little roots on the bottom and will be putting them in cups today after I go to walmart and petsmart for more cups and coir.  So excited to see progress and leaves on yours.  

Chris, I recently potted my cuttings and will keep you posted, so far green growth on everyone.

3 days in clear cups and the roots are huge .. will post pics soon looks like a keeper :)

Cool stuff everyone. Thanks for the updates. Once you plant them in soil they seem to take off. They go from root initials to visible roots on the side of the cup in a couple of days( ask Joe lol)!I'm planting them straight in light soil in mini sips ans single gallon pots. It s been working wonders ever since the weather got warmer.
Very consistant one lobe,almost mulberry looking leaf patern. I will update with photos as soon as they grow a bit more. Very strong so far!

If you look at the third and last pic on the first post,you see a crazy looking cutting with roots all over it. It was planted directly in soil in mini sip. Never in Baggie, moss or humidity chamber ,it was planted about a week before the photo was taken. It remained covered with another bottle( dome) on the window sill.temps between 65 and70F. I cut it on Sunday right above the second bud counting from the top ,counting the very first little one. The top piece was planted in soil kinda sideways ( bud covered) and placed in my unheated shed.This is what it looks like now!

Feb 25 is when i received the cuttings and they went directly into different pots,
this 2 Lt bottle with water in bottom plastic 32 oz cup is something new i tried it seems to work,

Ha. Here's a photo I just received from Mrs Barbara, the owner of the Slidell ukn tree, taken this morning! I guess spring has very well sprung in Louisiana !
If you zoom in and look closely you can see a Breba fig.

Thanks for posting photos.   I also, can't wait to see photos of it when it ripens its first fig.

The reason I am interested in this Fig is its Compact Dwarf Form .
I grow figs in pots so I am speculating dwarf types might be best for  permanent pot culture?

I am interested in hearing from any other members   from zones 6 , zone 5 , zone 4 that have this fig tree , to see if the Mane Crop  Ripens up Early Enough for there region.....?
and if they get a Breba  crop ?

Also want to hear from  those who leave trees in a pots permanently ?

Nice size fig......looks like a variant of Celeste .....I'm sure that it will be delicious ....LOL

For sure (Celestoid). I hope there will be a few figs left on the tree during the LSU field day so that we can all get a taste. . It sure looks perfectly ripe though and significantly different in color from my Celeste. Thanks for your input Deerhunter.

If the celeste are left on the tree they get dark like that here. Here is some I picked this morning (blue bowl) . I know in this pic there are a bunch of lighter ones but there is some that looks exactly like yours.

So, does the Slidell Black Unk exhibit the notorious fig drop tendency that is so well known in Celeste?

Not that I know of. It responded very well to the haircut it received this year and came back to produce a bunch of small but very firm and tasty figs. It maintains the dwarf stature unlike my Celeste that grow like weeds and ripened the fruit very early and within the first two weeks of July in that location! Very quick grower as the cuttings go . I will probably get some figs next year!
