Ha Ha, Niagara Black.Second year plant is turning out to be an excellent tasting, good producing fig.Last year, it produced a little late and the figs with paler with less flavor. It is definitely a relative of Melanzana (Nordland, Longue D'Aout etc) which I am proud to say originates from Calabria. Thanks to John Parav from Toronto for introducing this one to the fig world. The second last picture contrasts its size with rdb.
Start the coffee. I'll be down.
Looks very similar if not identical to Longue D'Aout. If it is, Niagara Black should be an excellent fig!Thank you for sharing the photos Frank. Nice figs!
Have been waiting for some time for a review of this fig as i got it from a lovely Canadian member.I have never seen a fig like this one before, nice and jammy.the RDB looks great too, congrats for having such a nice tree.. nowi have to find more Calabrian figs
Really NICE looking fig.
Is the color Variation normal for these varieties? one is much darker than the other...i saw this color variation in LDA also in other forum posts, sometimes yellow sometimes bit brown.
That's a really nice looking fig, Frank, lucky you! I think I caught a 3 Stooges reference?
Hey FrankThat would be interesting if Niagara Black has a Calabria connection. John P. said he discovered this fig in Niagara Falls Ca and at one time there were a lot of Calabrese in that town.I have a small Niagara Black plant and I am trying to get a Melanzana long (supposedly the real calabrese melanzana). If I do it will be an interesting comparison. Although it seems many people are convinced it may be a relative of Longue D'Aout. Regardless it sounds like a great fig for cool climates!
Very nice looking!! Don't it just send you heart in your throat when picking figs to start to reach and see those beady eyes and sharp little wings....
Hi FMD,Yes, typical lda fig.The question now is "Was your niagara black a correctly labeled tree or a mislabeled one ? " ...I don't have "Niagara Black" ... But I have lda .
Hi jdsfranceAre you saying IDA fig looks like Niagara Black? Do you have any photos or links you can share on this Ida fig?
Try leaving it longer on the tree to ripen, last year was my first year for it and the first I picked like yours but then later ones I left longer and they got darker inside, very sweet and juicy then too. The dripping honey fools me because it can drip before it is even ripe and it just oozes out.
Very nice, Frank. I can't wait for these to ripen here. (inch by inch).Mike
Hi Pino,Patience, patience ... My lda figs are still in waiting stage... Which is normal, as end of August or September is their ripening time here ...
very nice!
