Slug ugh!

  • JR

On the way out the door this morning my heart sank.... I saw this wretched creature like a vulture at a lion's kill.  Apparently a blue jay dug up the last of my Turkish beauties and pecked into the stalk of the scion itself, maybe trying to get the fungus larvae which I've been battling the last few weeks.  Then the banana slug was in for the kill.... Perhaps the saddest part of all of this is that this is one of the fig trees that the birds had uprooted a few weeks back when I lost my water heater and well pump on the same day, and it was just now starting to show new growth.  Excuse me... I need a moment.... *sniff sniff*....

The plant looks great.  The slug should be moved and introduced to some salt.

i see slug trails now and then around my 1 gal pots, but never seen one on top of the leaves yet. i'll make sure to season one exact salty next time.

JR,
Don't feel too sad, I will commiserate with you. I lost my well last week too (980' deep)...it's in the repair cycle now and should be back up by tomorrow  Ack, was that expensive!
Good thing there was enough water in the 5,000 gal tank to cover the necessities, watering my 200+ fig trees.

You have slugs, I have baby opossums driving the cats nuts and their mom enjoying the fruits of my labor. So far the apples are well protected (so I think) and the figs are not near ripe but something got my apricots, both of them.

Sue

Yes, Sue, opposums and raccoons are the worst. They work at night, the squirrels take turns during the day.
Those beasts can get enywhere!
For the slugs I use Sluggo, works great and it is not salty.

I have found cups of old beer to kill massive amounts of slugs without putting toxic chemicals into your yard.

Can you describe an "old beer"? Dark or light?

Any beer will work, he probably means left over.

Interesting, I never any beer leftovers :)
And what kills the slugs? Yeast? Alcohol?

not sure what kills them.. but i'm very certain they died happy death x)

Slugs get fed to my box turtle she loves them. She was a rescue. Her shell was cracked when my buddy ran her over with a Gator

I have lots of slugs (or at least did).  I used slug bait from HD (I think it is made by Bayer).  I literally had 100's that were absolutely eating all of my amarlyis as soon as any new leaves would come out.  After two doses (you just sprinkle it on the ground) about 10 days apart, no more slugs.

Alan, I think it the same as my Sluggo, good stuff!

The slugs that I've caught on fig cuttings were eating the buds.I have not caught one eating the leaves yet.

good morning everyone, just ran across the slug thread and wanted to add a slug solution that works for me. probably not organic but not really too toxic either. just buy some household ammonia and pour into a plastic spray bottle. hit them with a couple of sprays and watch them squirm! kills them dead! ammonia breaks down and is pretty much harmless. one caution....dont spray ammonia directly on the leaves of plants. with all the rain and wet we are having lately slugs are in paradise! usually go out shortly after dark and look for them crawling (they will be extended and skinny) plus observe the shiny trails to know where to look the following night. good luck, randy

You can put an old jar lid or lids 3/4 full of cheap beer near your trees. The slugs will crawl in and drown.
