Smart pots?

Any if you try them? What's your take on them? Worth it or bother?http://www.smartpots.com/smart-pot-air-prunes

Love 'em!  Only downside is that you'll need to water more often, since they dry out quicker.  And, the roots do grow into the pot, which makes transplanting a little bit of a delicate operation on sensitive plants, so, I tend NOT to use the smaller sizes on plants I know I'll be up-potting soon.

Good points. Thank you. What do you like about them over the plastic container?
How well do they over winter?

I find them to be about the same cost, or less than the plastic, but they do last longer here in South Florida.  The heat and salt in the air tend to make the plastic pots brittle, so that even moving the plastic pots, they break.  I've had my SmartPots for three years now and they're all still holding up fine with no holes, etc.  And, being in South Florida, I like that they keep the root zone cooler so the roots don't "cook" in the heat down here.  It's also impossible to overwater the SmartPots, as long as you have a good draining mix, so even left outside in heavy rains, the pots drain naturally.  And, I've seen the results the aeration containers have on the roots and I do believe the air pruning and avoiding the "spiraling" of the roots in a plastic container makes for a stronger/healthier plant.  I also like that, if you're not going to move the container, the roots can grow through the bottom of the container and are able to establish contact and grow into the ground.  They're also very lightweight and easy to store, since they just fold up.

Good points. I may try one in the summer. My climate is different from yours in that it gets cooler in the winter but, I think that at least in the summer my plants could do with less heat.

I think those fiber Smart pots do work but aren't the best bang for your buck.  I use pots called "superoots air-pots".  For me, they give you one massive root ball that root prunes itself!  If I could convert my self watering pots to these, I wouldn't never have to root prune my trees!  Just give the trees liquid organic fertilizer every year.  The problem is they are expensive and hard to find in 150+ litre size.

Superoot Air-pots last a very long time.  And depending on your soilless composition, do have to water them more.  Drip irrigation works best using these pots.  I have a variety of sizes ranging from 1gal to 15gal. I researched getting larger smartpots, 30 and 40 gal sizes.  But the company that make them moved the business and product overseas.  I've contacted the company but no response at this time.  But I will keep looking!  These pots also work well for air layering.

here's a bit of information about them:  http://www.airpotgarden.com/
