Smith and Unk. Pastilliere PIX

Here is my only Smith this year from a small tree and about 9th Unk. Pastilliere from a cutting rooted the past winter. I posted the UP photos before but this one is interesting to compare with the Smith. ( I also mentioned that the Grasa's Pastilliere and the Jon's Unk. Pastilliere is the same fig assuming they came to me properly labelled).

We are in the middle of a super hot spell, having 110 every day. The ripening figs do not get softer, instead, they are drying on the branches. The Smith was hard as a walnut but the UP was still soft, probably because it was hanging under a leaf.

The taste of both is superb. The Smith is like a super sweet strawberry jam with very little of acidity.
The UP (my favorite this year) is also very sweet but with a hint of sour cherry, I wish I had more of them :)

Both are potted and caprified.

Nice Igor. I have Smith, but have not ripened yet. Same with my Pastilliere, but mine is from Raintree. I suppose it is different from yours?

Looks very nice, Igor. Thanks for sharing.

I have one from Raintree also! It has about 20 figs the size of a penny. I hope they will get ripe so I could compare with my UP and Pastiliere from Grasa.
So far, I am in love with them. Very productive and not super vigorous, perfect for containers.

Good looking figs

I love the color of your UP, and I had no idea a Smith could be so green, Thanks!

Great Looking Figs...Congratulations.    I should have a Smith fig next year.....my Pasitlliere from Jon is in Fig Heaven...LOL

Give the UP a couple more days on the tree.

Jon,
Agree, more days normally would mean a juicier fig with more concentrated taste.
But as I mentioned, with our super dry super hot weather , the figs simply dry up before they reach the perfect condition.

Also, the tree rats go crazy looking for water and fruit, I was afraid I wouldn't taste any.

OMG, being caprified makes a big difference, they look so good. I have Raintree so I would like to see how that turns out.

Me too :)
I think you need to wait for a month or so, stay tuned!

Will be patient and wait for the update.

Great looking figs. Newbie here, had a question. What does CAPRIFIED mean?

Another So Cal. member, you are in the right place to have the best-est figs.   Welcome on board.

Haha, good to hear. I hope so...

Caprified means pollinated. You need a special wasp for this and the male fig trees. You have them all available in the SGV!
Get yourself a Zidi for sure, esp. if you can plant in the ground.

Greefig congrats on the Smith. It is odd that it did not turn greyish or cracked skin like mine. Some people get spots on the skin when it ripens. Nonetheless, it is an awesome fig, I hope you get to enjoy many more that are truly ripe. Very jealous of your caprification.

:-)

Wow, they look delicious!

Red honey on smith`s ostiole, Amazing stuff..

Igor,
When ripe, the uncaprified develop purple veins. If you have the opportunity, leave on the tree for three more days and post the photos. I would LOVE to see that.

I will try my best, the second time.
I wanted to do just that, following the Jon's suggestion. Yesterday, some 4-legged bas*rd snapped the fig, the plastic shell, and part of the branch :(  It was that good, I guess.
This time, I will try to keep the pot with my two last figs away as far as possible.

JD,

Is this ripe enough? I have one more fig of the same ripeness that I left on the tree. Will see if it survives 2 more days or so. It is a caprified fig, I am not sure I can see the veins.
The taste is of a sweetened ripe sour cherry, very unique!

Beautiful fig Igor, didn't you say in another thread that you believe the UNK Pastilliere to be the same as Grassa's Pastilliere?

Yes, I did. They look and taste the same.

Hi greenfig,
Could you the leaf shape ?
I have a supposed to be pastiliere . Because the tree only had 2 figs ( what a crop! Houahou ?!? ), they were really big .
I'll open a post for mine later .
