Smith Fig? what a ugly but delicious fig

They are sure the most ugly figs out there but i hear that they are very
delicious, has anyone tried it? Is it good for zone 6b in ground?
what is so special about this fig tree?

Dont know why but i saw in a lot of places that the most ugliest of figs taste the best.

You can find a tree at a reasonable price from a good nursery. I "hear" Smith, is tricky to root and not that great of a producer, but it does have quality in taste.

Jennifer,

"I "hear" Smith, is tricky to root and not that great of a producer,"
Your first statement is correct, the second one regarding the productivity of Smith, is not. It's a prolific producer in container.

Navid.

i think i killed 3 green cuttings of Smith last year. oh well, other figs to root :)

Easier said than done....I have been looking for Smith for a couple weeks and everyone was out of stock including the two you listed.

At least when young Smith doesn't tolerate drought as well as most other figs.

Did you try calling James Robins?

I was given one generous cutting of Smith this year (Thank you, kind Donor.). It was long enough to cut in half. Both were treated the same. The bottom half rooted in an average time-frame and is already outside in full sun. The top half with a terminal bud still is just sitting there, weeks later, alive, doing nothing.

I've heard it's a very good tasting fig and am looking forward to trying it.
