Smyrna.....->>>> Common Fig

Will a Smyrna ever ..... ever become a Common Fig? Lets say specifically if there are no wasps?

Well, I do know the information we currently have says NO....

Looks like you answered your own question.

It does however raise the question of how much genetic variation there is when cloning figs using cuttings.
Seems differing strains of the same original fig and occasional a totally different looking sport arises.  Is this due to environment, disease or genetic change?

So thats what a sport is...... A different strain from a cutting from the mother tree???

To share....

I read that there exists a Calimyrna (source Indonesia).

On first thoughts.... Utter rubbish id say. There is no wasp in Indonesia.

Possibly a NOID tagged with the name Calimyrna?

Um....?

Or did it actually mutate?

I have never had a sport but heard the Adriano fig is a sport.  A white fig that grew from a black fig cutting.  Have heard of others as well.

It is an agreed to fact that some grapes do this.  An example is the many different Pinot Noir clones.
For grapes; the theory is that each bud is slightly different than other buds on the same vine and so if propagated will result in slightly different plant.  This is most pronounced with the Pinot Noir variety.

Several topics on sports on F4F.  Here is a link regarding Panache which is supposed to be a sport;

The Indonesian "Calimyrna" does not share any common with the real Calimyrna even their leaves are different shape... :)

thanks Pino. This is so interesting to me.

So all of us need to keep track of labeling because we may think we have a mislabeled fig and we have a sport.

Yes, that could be true, but extremely rare. Sports happen in many fruit trees and shrubs.

Thank you pino
