ACK!!!!!!!!
Ouch. When I was a kid growing up in South Jersey I remember one Halloween it snowed. Not much as I recall.
The current forecast (as of wed. afternoon) calls for the snow to miss the NJ/NY area as the low pressure system dips way to the south and then swings up the coast out at sea. However, a) that could change, and b) there is still a forecast of 32degree F temps on Sunday. What are you folks going to do with your potted figs? Are you going to do a fig shuffle? All my figs are still pretty well leafed out and none look like they're ready to go to sleep for the winter...Jim
Rich, It may be easier for me to drive all my figs up to your place to keep them in your garage than to clean out my own garage ;-)Ya got any room?Cheers,Jim
About 10 years ago a colleague at work offered me his greenhouse, since he was retiring and moving to Florida where he would not need one. I wasn't into figs then and I turned him down without even looking at it. STUPID, STUPID move on my part. That would have come in handy right about now...Jim
Hi,Well it is almost November and fig trees handle the 30°F/0°C pretty well . So I wouldn't move a pot until you hit -5°c/23°F or -10°C/14°F or snow coming in .Or are you still waiting for some fig to ripe?
Eep, I'm new to this. Have a one-yr old fig Chicago Hardy that did not do well this year. :( I stuck it in the garage a couple of weeks ago already and the leaves on it were getting a bit yellowed. From this thread it sounds like I should have left it out until it dropped all the leaves OR snow comes?? Should I take it back out again??
It will be at or below freezing here tomorrow night with warmer temperatures returning on Monday. I have a number of figs ripening, not sure if I should cover them or if they will handle it o.k.. Can't shuffle them as they are in the ground. Mike in Hanover, VA
I agree with jdsfrance, only thing to remember is the windchill. If it's-5 but with -10 windchill I would worry, otherwise I let them get -6 or so before bringing in most years.
The night get in the low 40s now - its probably too late to pull out the plant to let it do what its suppose to do and go dormant naturally... oh well. I hope I didn't kill it.
We have had light frosts with temperatures in the mid-30's, no damage at all. Hopefully the plants that still have green stems can harden up quickly, they do appear to be changing with the speckled brown moving into the green. Mike in Hanover, VA
