so i ate some ants..

apparently, ants love Paradiso Gene as much as i do. one of them found a way into the fig. i cut it open and it was swimming in it. thought about it for a split second and i just ate the whole thing.. ants and all.

Roflol! way to go!
I'd probably do the same thing.
I could use the protein anyway.

At least he didn't alert the whole colony!!  You are too much Pete!

Me, I'd get a knife and flip the dude ouda there!!

What if he lives and breeds in your digestive parts?....... shudder

Suzi

Ha! Ha! HA! Suzi you're so funny!
I love your sense of humor!
You always make my day.
Don't ever change!

Another complementary food combination for figs! They improve anything.

Barry... but that will hide the natural taste of fig and ant :)

Hope it wasn't a fire ant or that's one spicey fig.

I don't know about that Pete. I recall seeing someone post pics of chocolate covered figs before and they said they were pretty good. I'd give it a try

I sure somewhere someone is putting his fig near an ant just so he can have a little meat with his fig.

I wouldn't let an ant deprive me of what I wanted.

Ants are considered delicacies in some countries. Especially ant larva.

Bullet where the ants the dark type .  ; )

oh geez, I'm hoping they were the rare albino white headed, blanco ants

I am right there with you Pete. I blow them off from the outside and go with it unless they have already consumed a good deal of it. Sometimes I wondering if that crunch is a seed or something else. We wait to long for uninvited late shows to freeload a meal.

If you eat dry figs, or figs raised in the California central valley, you are probably eating fig wasps.. Maybe they add that nice crunch some think are the seeds. ;) Figs and wasps are both in the same large order of insects, so not much difference. :)

I've read some vegans and vegetarians won't eat figs, nor even newtons, for this reason.

Ants off course. I left a plate of Honey on the table and got busy with talkative customer. After I finished my phone calls got the bread and found that the ants invaded the honey. I told them you eat my honey I  eat you and eat the whole thing I did not feel any difference I ants are full with vitamine. I wish I have the courage to eat the bugs which are eating my vegetables. It survival game.

You are watching too much of "Bizarre Foods."   I admit I've eaten a bird pecked fig, but after thinking about it, I'm just throwing those away now.  Don't want to get some kind of bird flu.

barry,

you gave me an idea. i think i'll go get some good quality chocolate and make choco covered fig for my wife.

martin,

the ants around my house lack your fine taste.. they like the figs with bit of opening, and Paradiso Gene fits the bill. Kathleen's Black and VdB are rather tight around the eye. doesn't mean they won't try :)

So this morning I noticed a little weevil crawling aorund one if my figs. Anyone have experience with weevils and figs  - - and - -  how do they taste?

Tanglefoot will stop the ants.

Chocolate covered figs yes are greatand everyone that like figs and also like chocolate has to try it one time at least.

Just dont waste good chocolate on white types.  ; )

This is something that should go into the regional information. We can compare the flavors of different protein supplements...

alexis..

problem with that is, we need to sample the protein source in greater amount than what's attached to the figs. now, that can turn rather nasty. i wouldn't mind occational ant or two.. but i won't eat spoonful of them x) a spoonful of sugar makes medicine go down... medicine go down..

Hmm...expanding on that how about a caramelized fig and onion compote with lump meat crab cakes made with chopped fish peppers and bound with mashed Yukon Gold potatoes? Crabs are bugs, right :)

i was watching national geo some time ago, and they were eating a giant spider in south america.. these were size of dinner plates. they get the hair off the spider and wrap it in some leaves, drop it into the fire. after awhile it's cooked.

they said it taste like crab. i always wanted to try them.. the largest spider i saw was some wolf spider up in va. it was about the size of White Greek main crop. i was so busy stepping on it to think of cooking it.

Arthropods...and thank goodness for grocery stores.
